Low Oil Pressure

On a cold engine oil pressure will climb to 3 to 3.5 (keeping RPMs under 3000) as the engine warms though it stays in the 2 to 3 range ever when bringing RPM up to 4 to 5,000 rpm

The funny thing is that when the needle climbs it makes a sudden drop as if it loosing the signal or a pressure valve opens.

Not burning oil, no leaks and engine sounds fine. I am hoping it is a electrical gremlin with the gauge or the sender.

How does one verify the actual oil pressure with out using the on board gauge and or how does one test the gauge / sender to verify they are reading correctly.

Oh last time I really drove it (ashamed to say it) back in July all was well. Have taken a few short trips here and there and all was fine then as well. This past Saturday I noticed the issue.

Thanks

Omar,
I've got a mechanical guage you can barrow if you'd like. I used it when I had the same problems. (turned out to be a worn out engine but that shouldn't be your problem)

Would love to. Can I meet you someplace next week as I am on vacation and want to get this resolved before the next drive.

This sounds exactly like what my oil pressure gauge was doing. It ended up being the sending unit.

I have a good sending unit at home (but not sure of the PN). Let me know and if it works on your car I'll send it to you for nuthin...

Omar,
It was only about $15 at the autozone so it's not worth your time or mine to drive from g-boro to Concord for it.

Omar,
I just picked up a generic one. Mine hooks up right next to the breather in the back but I belive yours in in the front just to the right of the fan. Mine came with american fittings so I used some teflon tape to seal it. It leaked a little but it gave me a good reading.
