Rough Idle when Cold
I am new to the BBS and am looking at a buying a 84 Targa, the dash is cracked and the car starts very rough when cold (looking high and low for an idle point). Once it is warm, it is smooth.
Is this a cold start valve problem or just an adjustment? Second question, the car has a cracked dash, is that an easy do it yourself repair? |
it starts, so it's not a starting problem. the idle speed and mixture must be set properly when the engine is hot, to get the best results. it may be a tuneup issue, or even a cylinder with low compression. so do a compression and leakdown test along with the PPI, before you make a deal.
on the dash crack, any "magic fix" will look like crap. new dash time. |
Thanks,
I was planning on getting a pre purchase inspection, I was hoping someone may have had the rough start when cold problem. Once it is warm it runs real smooth and the idle is rock solid. I kind of figured the dash was going to need replacing. From a do-it-yourself standpoint, does the windshield have to come out on the '84s to replace the dash? |
It might just be a matter of getting the base idle speed set lower. My 86 idles up and down quickly when first started if I have the idle set too high. A P-wrench replaced the idle air control valve thinking that it went bad only to find out my idle was set too high.
Cheers, Joe |
I replaced the dash in my '84 last winter. Yes the window HAS to come out, no way around it. Several screws that hold it in are under the windshield. I updated my dash to the late 80's design (better vents and allows you the ability, albeit still difficult, to pull the dash w/o pulling the windshield).
