Quick! Need a set of skinny, ratty, steel or alloy wheels!

After much discussion in the chat room tonight, I think I've found a solution to my "get the car home from Seattle" problem. (For those of you who may not be familiar, I am trying to drive a SC back from Seattle to Great Falls, MT through very unpredictable winter weather.) I've looked at every option and so far the best option seems to be to put a set of ratty 15" wheels and some studded snow tires on the SC for the trip back. If anyone in the PNW has a set of old wheels laying around that they are either willing to part with or lend to me, I'd appreciate it. I just need any old set of 6 or 7 inch rims that will fit on a SC. Any leads would be appreciated! Help me get this car home!!!

Leland, I have a set of old BBS alloys with snows already on them but they are too damm far away! I am in Phoenix but would be happy to let you use them if we could figure out a way to get them there. Used them all over Europe, in snow up to 10 inches deep and never had any problems. The 911 does snow very well with a set of good tires. Good to see you back and let me know if these would help! JoeA

Just what I was thinking, For the money to ship just put some studs on her all the way around and drive her home. Then clean her up real good when you get in. I would put some temporary stone shields or??? on to save the paint too. Good Luck | ||

I got those too .................a set of 15' cookie cutters are in the shop. Ready to go. Good tires on them ready to go. I can probably come up with a set of chains for them too. But IMHO, going slower beats the hell out of chains.

Oops, It was pretty late last night when I posted this thread... and it shows. It was supposed to go to the Classifieds forum. Anyway, many thanks to all of you who offered to help. The ideal situation would be able to pick up a set local to the Seattle area. I got an email from Glenn this morning and he said that there is an event taking place on Saturday in Portland. If all goes well, I should be able to attend and definately could use your wheels, Craig. One question though; will they fit an SC? Also, how much do you want for them? Thanks guys, Lee

one other thought; w/ steel wheels, you'll need steel lugs (the Alum/alloy ones will likely bottom out before they reach the thinner steel wheel.)

Good point... Well, I figure worst case senario I can buy an el-cheap-o set of lug nuts from the tire store I have mount the snow tires. The person who comes through with the wheels will be personally responsible for getting the SCWDP founder home alive. Alive, people...

Does anyone know about how much I can expect to pay to have a new set of snow tires fitted with studs? Approximation? Cary, I will try to stop by and visit, depending on how I do on time.

I'm afraid of rubbing issues with the wheel wells. Plus, I believe you can't travel much faster than 30 mph with chains... I'd just feel better with studs. Of course, I have no experience with either. In my mind, studded snow tires would just work better.

I just had a set of four used tires sent up via Greyhound package Express from Tucson to Seattle. It took three days, Paul down in Tucson tied the tires together. You could do the same with wheels mounted tied two together.

Leland, I can try and fit them on my 83 SC Cab. It might not be until late Monday or early Tuesday until I get up there to do that. These are early 911 or 912 chrome wheels. I will take another look and let you know. I am signed up for Rainbonnet ( or Snowbonnet), last year we had sunny but cool weather. My storage building is close to the Monarch motor hotel where the event is taking place. If these will work you can have them. Craig C. Laughlin

I don't think I could get chains under these wheel wells... Harlan, the only reason I was hoping something locally would show up is simply due to time constraints. I may be in Seattle by next friday!

Leland, here is another plan, I have some extra wheels Fuchs, let me also check those and see what I can come up with. I will get back to you tomorrow. You could always Greyhound them back later. Craig C. Laughlin

Craig, We were writing at the same time. I guess I need to find out if these wheels will fit on the SC. I don't want you to have to go and actually try it. We should be able to find out if 5.5 inch steel wheels from an early 911/912 will fit on a SC. I'll hit the search engine and in the mean time if anyone knows the answer, please feel free to win the question of the day!
