Drivers window does not work

The drivers side window on my 74 targa does not seem to work. The crank turns but the window does not move and I don't hear any grinding sounds as if the teeth are stripped. I pulled off the interior panel to get a better look but am having a pretty tough time seeing back behind the crank to see where the problem lies. Any tips or suggestions?

I went through this exact thing last year. What happened to me (and I found out it was common on older cars) the shaft that the gear assembly pivots on broke. The window regulator gears then slipped out of position.

There are two options I found to fix it.

1. Buy the upgrade parts and install the new type regulator. This will required drilling new holes. I started that route, but was dreading it. It also was going to cost about $200 or so before I was done.

2. I found a new pivot at performance parts for about $30. I couldn't find one at pelican at the time. I haven't checked since then to see if they have them. I hope they do.

I replaced the pivot and all works well. This is also a good time to replace all the window seals and such, since you will have to take all of that out. Also, clean and lube everything; since you're going to have the door torn apart. I did my passenger window. Still waiting for the driver's side to break to force me to do it. The passenger works so smooth now.

Good luck. Plan a nice day's worth of work.

Ditto.. and

different size pivot spring retainers and different pivot position in spring are an option

I was also thinking that this may be a good time to update to power windows. There are generic pw kits on ebay for about 90 bucks (anyone have any experience with these) or maybe I can get a porsche specific kit for around 200. Anyone ever tried to install pw on your previously manual 911? How did it go? Are the generic kits any good?

If I was doing an update I'd get used Carrera window regulators with the strong updated pivot, new aftermarket/identical motors/cheap, new switches.. and I'm not sure if the window to regulator bracket is needed.. Or call a dismantler for everything, which would include the motor door harness......Ron

I'm in the same boat. My driver's side window was getting hard to crank up so I took some advice from the board and "went in" for a little look. My problem was a little different as mine was "hard" to crank and not just spinning. Once I got everything off it was a real pain to access (or see). I did my best to clean and lube; however, now the regulator seems to slip while rolling the window up. I hadn't thought about power windows until I read your response....hmmmm. Let us know what you decide and how it goes.
