Cool And so it starts...

My wife can't figure out why I just can't leave the car alone...But I don't have to explain myself here. Saturday I started to disassemble The Red Queen. She will be transformed over the long crappy Indiana winter. She will emerge in the spring with a new coat af Satin Black paint with Gloss Black Carrera door scripts and little bits of chrome here and there. Going for the '50's Rat Rod look. I am sure will have some early car disassembly and paint questions. I have everything off the car but the front fenders and front bumper. I think I will delete the passenger battery box while I am in there.
BTW: Went for a ride in Kevin Stewarts car. (3.6 GruppeB hotrod)
That car will flat out MOVE!!!

You definitely want to delete the passenger battery box as you don't need it and if you want a Carrera oil cooler in the future the box has to go.

Okay, here is a picture.

Seriously though...Just imagine the car taken apart. I haven't done anything kuhhhrazy yet.(to the car)

The front turn signal housings are being a bear. But they will come out if they like it or not.
I have a fender mount cooler. Which is why the battery box must go! It sits like an inch away from the box.
Need to buy mass quantitys of sand paper. When I rub the fingerprints off my fingers I will work on my homemade muffler.

Excellent Shawn! I'll be performing surgery this winter too!

I received butt-weld clamps in the mail last Friday, and with the weather getting worst, I'll be striping the car for a good old Gruppe B molesting!

When Heather starts in on the "Why are you doing that, or why do you HAVE to do that?"...I tell her I can just sell the whole car and not work on any car. BUT! Then I'll have to go out and buy a very high priced sports car that doesn't need me to work on it.

That usually buys me a few months.

Good luck with the winter project!

WUF! WUF!

Souk, I cant wait to see your car backdated. What color? Are you doing a total RS clone or just going for the RS look?

Just going for the RS look for now!

I have been back and forth with the color choice. I've always wanted a black 911, but my car was originally silver. I like silver, and I have decided silver so many times to see a black car, then change my mind. I think the only way to cure the indecision is just to get two cars!

I want silver, but most silver finishes are too flat, esp. the 936 factory silver. I have considered a Mercedes silver.

I'll be doing my own body and paint, so it's going to be a fun winter...never mind that I need to redo the suspension with much bigger t-bars! It's going to be a long winter...

Did I mention, I like you color choice? I've (no offense you red owners) never been a fan of red Porsches.

I dont like red either. Too ordinary for a 911. Also no offense to red 911 owners...just not my thing. I am sure most of the red 911 owners arent to fond of semi-gloss black. I am also doing all the paint and(hopefully no)bodywork myself.

Shawn your car is gonna look awesome. You've inspired serious thoughts of doing the satin black thing to my Targa.

The funny thing is, now that it's cooling off, I can actually drive my car. And in the summer time it's too hot to really get any work done on it.

So I guess I just have to keep it the way it is for now.

I thought for sure i would cause an outrage on Pelican over my color choice. I am surprised at the amount of people that think it is gonna look cool. Maybe a trend will emerge...
On a technical note:
I plan to hang plastic sheeting on the walls and across the rafters. Place a fan in the garage window for a vent, and wet the floor. Should I be concerned that the fan motor will ignite the paint fumes? Any pointers for a cheap paint booth speak up.

Shawn,

I'm going to try making a booth out of my garage too, but I intend to use a fan to "force" ventilate the booth. That will essentially inflat the plastic "air space." Inducted air will go through a couple fo box fans with filters in front and behind them. Outlet air will go through a single filter, thus creating positive pressure in the booth.

The gain is that the plastic won't collapse onto my paint, and I don't have to worry about fumes flowing over an ignition source.

Thanks guys. I could set the fan at the garage door and use the window as a exhaust vent.
I already have my name on some headers for a killer price. I think I might end up with enough spare change to but a real muffler.

Souk, bad idea. What you really want is negative pressure in the paint booth. Positive pressure, through the use of the fans is going to force overspray all over the place. I painted a car in a one car basement garage doing what Shawn describes. I used thick mil (don't get the thin stuff) sheeting attached with furring strips to the ceiling. Make sure you use plastic sheeting across the rafters or sheet rock ceiling also. I then attached the bottom of the sheets to 2x4's. I taped the corners together. I then cut a hole in the lower part of one side of the plastic sheeting, opposite and the farthest away from where I was going to vent the booth. Tape two furnace filters together and then tape over the outside of the hole. I vented out a window, using a box fan with a furnace filter taped over the intake, at the opposite corner. You then end up with air coming in down low and exiting up high carrying any overspray with it. I have never worried about a spark ignition, because in my opinion you don't build up enough fumes for the air to ignite. Of course you can always get a non sparking fan. I kept the air compressor out of the booth and just ran the hose in. My wife never even complained about any fumes in the house!

Just to clarify, you have to have an exit vent hole in the plastic. I cut mine around the fan and taped the hole in the plastic around the furnace filter which was attached to the fan. If your plastic "wall" is some distance away from the window you are venting out of, then tape two filters together and tape to a hole in the plastic sheeting up high and closest to where your exhaust fan will be.
