Problem with airflow inside cabin...

I have a constant flow of outside air coming through center A/C vent in my 79SC. The car is a Euro and came with no A/C system.

Where would the flow of air be originating from?

RoninLB 11-04-2003 12:05 AM

when I trashed my AC I made sure the AC cabin inlet was always getting fresh air from the smugglers box vent holes.. open up the smugglers box and plug the AC feed.........Ron

Chris79SC 11-04-2003 03:24 AM

Thanks Ron, it appears you purposely have air flowing into the cabin after you removed your A/C. Do you drive your car during the winter?

The main reason I want to cut the airflow is the outside air during the winter only helps to make the cabin more of an icebox!

My car never had A/C an blows fresh air through the center vents. However there are two levers, one near each vent that close the flow.

Jadams1 11-04-2003 04:14 AM

Hey Chris, do you have any PICS of your car?

Mike Kast 11-04-2003 04:25 AM

Chris79SC,
I have an 79 with no AC also. I'm going to be tearing into the thing today. I'll post some pics as I go.

How are your rockers attached?

Mike

I'd be REAL interested in seeing your work as you go through the car. What are you planning on doing?

Chris79SC 11-04-2003 05:33 AM

Chris Bennet - I can check with my body shop guy (I'm currently getting the RUF bumper resprayed) but if my memory is right they're adhesive attached, not welded.

I remember that some additional work was needed for the rocker on the rear flare but nothing too complicated.

Jadams1 11-04-2003 05:38 AM

Looks great Chris. Great color! Thanks!

ChrisBennet 11-04-2003 05:39 AM

I like the look of the C2 rockers but I haven't seen them done so they were detachable. I'd want to be able to get behind the rockers in case I wanted to access the torsion bars. Behing able to access the jack point would be nice too.

Hey Chris,
I'm assuming your center vent is only for AC like my car.. otherwise the trunk fresh air fan plenum flapper control is probably out of adjustment.

I drive all winter if only to exercise the car. sunroof open, 1/4 windows open, and usually fresh air going to defroster to keep fresh air comming into my face.. the heater controls allow high heat to come from beneith at the same time, I always have door windows both closed.

My guess is that the trunk seal is letting air in as you drive. That is pressurizing the trunk, and that pressure has found an outlet, your dash vents.

Chris79SC 11-04-2003 06:22 AM

Steve - Whoa...I would think this is certainly happening with my car. The trunk seals are nowhere near airtight. the smugglers box isn't covered with the factory cover...I have a board with 2 amplifiers mounted over the opening...

Ron - I'm going to check out the air plenum...just want to get the car sealed as good as possible before winter comes to Long Island.

Remove this hose at this point and duct tape the output side at the main box so that you can cover the tape up with the duct when you put it back on. You don't need to put it back on once you close up the passage but it will look nicer that way. I took mine apart last week to reattach that same duct that was disconnected where it enters the dash. I didn't realize it until I had it all apart that the dash vent was closed off. Still, I don't think the air needed to be blowing around my trunk.

This is my project. My vent boxes are all disconnected from the cables that operate them. Most of the clips that fasten the cables are missing. The cables that run from the dash controls to the flapper box's seem to be seized up.
I'm going to try and bring it back to the way it came from Stuttgart.
Today I'm going to remove all the cables and see if I can regrease them and get them back in order. The clips are on the way.
I'm going to wash out all those box's while I'm at it and maybe even paint the back area the color of the car. I saw a car with the smugglers box cover painted black. It looked kinda cool :D
There is some good info about the system here

Mike - very interested as I may follow in your footsteps with my car. Please update with photos, or anything you encounter along the way today....much appreciated!

Mike Kast 11-04-2003 11:09 PM

this is where I started today.

[img]http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads2/aaaaheat
sys00011068018350.jpg[/img]

The top cable that goes to the fan was fine. The two lower cables were bent up pretty bad where the leave the shiething.
It was a royal ***** working on those cables. It is a real tight spot.
I pulled the cables out of the shieth and greased them with lithium grease. worked them in and out till they worked smoothly as the little bends that I couldn't strieghten out would. Pretty good.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068018665.jpg [img]

This is what I had to reclamp the wires through. I took that pic so I wouldn't loose track of anything...lol... like that was gonna help!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads2/aaaaheat sys00041068018766.jpg[/img]

While I was under the dash I bolted the heat lever box to the firewall and straped the radio in. Both were hanging loose. A million little details!

Ok. Then I went to the trunk. This is that line and duct that leads to the center AC vent after I removed the fresh air box that the fan is mounted to.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068019192.jpg

In my car it is closed off at the vent in the dash from the factory.

These are the 4 main parts that make up the system in the trunk.
right and left flapper box's, fresh air box and fan flapper box. I don't know if the names are correct but thats what I'm calling them. I got some of the cables hooked back up. the ones in the back of the left and rights because there the most difficult and I reinstalled the right and left also. I cleaned them with soap and hot water. I was impressed by how much oil residue was in them. Pretty nasty. I guess thats what we're breathing when the heats on and the oil is dripping on the heat exchangers.
