Do Koni shocks *break*?

I was chasing a suspension problem after a run on Sunday that smacked of the collar having worked loose on the strut. In fact, the collar was tight as a...well you know. I took it off anyway and pulled out the shock. While playing around with it, I noticed *free travel* for a short distance which would act like the collar had come off. Seems like it's almost consistant, but not quite. It's weird. I have no idea as to the shock's age or history. Looks fairly new. So do the rears, which would give reason to believe that they are not the original shocks. Your thoughts?

BTW, in response to a former topic, the strut had a light oil inside. This is a Koni shock in a Koni strut.

There have been known cases of new Konis failing or even coming out of the box with a problem. The ones I'm aware of were Koni Sports for type44 quattros, didn't stop me from using them and Koni made good on the ones that had accompanying receipts.

Milt,

It sounds like you have Koni replacement cartridges ... are they the old hydraulic, or the newer low-pressure gas type? Part number would be the way to tell.

The type of play you describe sounds like the hydraulic type when low on oil. Any sign of past or current leakage around the strut rod seal?
