Is it just me? Or are they lazy and crazy?
 

i have recently been looking for a '74 911 project car to build a track car out of. I have had a hard time finding one but have come accros many project cars around the country that people want to get rid of....only problem is, they all seem to think their pile of parts are worth $100k. They are all to lazy to go through the hassle of parting out, to lazy to finish the project and they all want to sell the "project that has sat for 10 years" for maximum dollar! I found a '76 911 with a 1983 turbo motor. The guy hadn't touched it in over 12 years. The engine "runs as far as i know...but its been 12 years since i started it." He sent pictures of the rusty car and dusty motor to me with a message stating that $12,000 was the minimum he would accept and i was to come and get it out of his yard. Another guy, on pelican has his car all apart and states that $6,000 is the minimum he will take....its been apart for like 5 years? The same cars sell complete for as little as $6k!! I dont get it....if you have a pile of parts then part out if you want maximum dollar, if you want to get rid of your clutter and headache then sell it cheap, be willing to take a loss, and it will go away!!...or get OFF YOUR LAZY BUTTS AND FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED!!!!

And they say it's a "Buyers Market" :)

Some people don't feel any particular need to sell unless they get lucky and get top dollar. In other words, they don't need the money, but would sell if you convince them to.

And for the record, I don't think that a '76 with a Turbo motor is priced out of line at $12K, even if it needs some work :D (see sig.).

Look for motivated sellers. Some people cannot separate their emotions from the market price, and you cannot change that. It is the same with houses, furniture, equipment, etc. A car is typically a horrible investment when it is just sitting away in the garage unused, but some people see in shades of gray instead of black & white.

Now, if you are smart, you will wait out the guy with the '76 911 w/ turbo engine, because maybe one day he will really need the money bad (wife says it must go), and you will be just the guy who can offer him 20 cents on the dollar. :) Hey, it could happen...

Just recalling seeing an add in the local about six months ago with the title "German Homewrecker for sale!" I called a Day after the add was published and the car was sold. Turned out it was a 1976 turbo in good running condition sold for 7,000 Canadian. Apparently She said he spent to much time/money working on the car...divorce....she got the car....didn't drive standard......sold. I wish I kept the add it was funny.

good point turbo6bar. Seems like all the "projects for sale" want to lump sum sell their mess for the sum of the parts rather than for what it really is...a pile of junk that is in the way. I need more *****y wives to yell at these guys so i can get a cheap track car goin!!

Hmm, a 12 year ol motor that hasn't been used in 12 years? You may have to figure on some expensive work to revive.

I've noticed the same thing, only it's ratty-looking, ripped, torn, dirty leather front seats and everyone seems to think they're worth $500-$1000 in that condition. The bad thing is, somebody is buying them!!!

IMHO some don't realize how much time and $ are involved in a restoration. Then, they don't wish to acknowledge they eff'd up and try to get their $ back. Good luck.

Find someone that says they don't have the money to finish the project. That means they need money or have lost complete interest. Either way they will let it go cheapper than the rest.

I think some of these guys are kidding themselves with the thought that the car is "almost done". If they'd just spend a few days it could be driveable. In fact it is just a pile of parts (junk) and may never see the road again. I bet if you check back with the seller a year from now the dust will be slightly thicker and the engine will have sat for 13 years.

i know what you mean, but i think most have good intentions, just lackign the motivation to see a project through. the difficult thing with any project is completing it.

i did it with a triumph stag i tried to restore. i had no money. the car had a non std engine. the shell was rusted through.

result - i ended up with a stripped out car. a garage full of spare interior, secondhand engine and body parts, and a spare "good" shell. parted the whole lot out for £1,000 and bought a vw golf cab, best thing i ever did!!!

Alot of people who are selling "projects" don't realize the huge leap of faith a potential buyer must take to buy a 911 that can't have a proper PPI performed on, and whose engine *might* need a several thousand dollar rebuild.

I've seen 'em advertised before :) Usually a real nice car until you read the "engine ran when stored xxx years ago" comment.
