Did a Seine Gate Shift Kit!

Just installed a Seine Systems gate shift kit. Very easy install, the worst part was removing the console over the shifter, the whole process took about 3 hrs working slowly and a break for dinner. This is definitely a great upgrade. Now downshifting out of 5th won't be a gamble. I highly recommend spending the $ on this for piece of mind!

Cool- I'm going to be doing this. At least I have one but maybe don't need it. I've never been unsure about the 5-4 shift. It feels totally precise. THe seine kit can't hurt though.

Whats option M491?

Toothzilla 11-04-2003 05:13 PM

M-491 is the turbo look option.

NY65912,

Why did you pick seine over wevo? Was it price or something else? I'd like to do a similar mod, and was just checking all my options.

thanks,
Chris

PS, I have an 84 m491

As Chris mentioned the factory option code for a turbo look car is M491.

I picked the Seine Systems kit for what I precieved to be a kit that did what was needed at a reasonable cost. Robotek looks like a great product but appears to be equal in what it accomplishes for more cost. I did'nt think I would like the feel of the WEVO shifter, just my opinion , (please no offense implied).

Had my doubts about any kit, but must say this is a worthy upgrade.

I think the M491s combination is cool, all the running gear and braking of a turbo with the cool look but with a lot less cost and maintenance....again, (no offense implied to you Turbo owners)

Oh by the way....here she is now!

What did the kit cost you? Does it replace the whole shifter assembly? I just did the short shift kit and it's ok, but I may want something different, thanks.

NY65912 11-04-2003 06:02 PM

Matt, no it does not replace the entire shifter, essentially it is a plate that bolts to the top of the shifter housing in which the tabs are the gates, a guide piece that attaches to the shifter a longer pin that activates the spring mechanism that is then bolted to the side of the housing. Really fairly easy to do. Really tightens up the mechanism, be sure to replace the bushing on the ball end and the guide in the tunnel if needed.

Cost was $142.00 here at our hosts.

Will it work with the short shift kit? Never mind, the description says that it does. Hmmm, somthing to think about.

scottb 11-04-2003 09:32 PM

The web site says it's compatible with the factory short shift kit.

Did you have to modify the shifter housing, or is it a straight bolt-on arrangement?

Great looking car, Kevin

NY65912 11-05-2003 03:01 AM

Matt, It will definitley work with a short shift kit.

Scottb, the stock housing has an opening on the side for the pin that levers the spring lockout, I had to elongated the opening with a Dremmel, not a big deal at all.

Kevin, Thanks!

The weekend is coming and I can't wait to put the car and shifter thru some paces.

Cheers, Mike

Hi guys...I know I'm a little late to this thread, but wanted to throw my hat into the ring regarding Sherwoods 'Gate-shift" kit.

I've had mine installed for over a year now and am totally happy with it. I personally can't see ever going back to the stock "non-gated" feel. I also have the factory shortshift installed.

I am equally satisfied with it at the track as well as on the street.
Best bang for the buck in defining the 1st/2nd vs. the 3rd/4th shift gates Cheap insurance against the dreaded 5th to 2nd downshift.

cheers !!

John--checked out your pelican gallery--awesome car! Is the Sherwood gateshift different than the Seine gateshift kit?

ubiquity0 11-05-2003 07:55 AM

JonT- its one & the same.
I have the Seine kit ready to go. I can't decide if I should install a factory short shift kit at the same time.

Just thought I'd add about the FSS kit. I installed it about two months ago and couldn't imagine going back. It made all the difference in the world for my car. Now the only thing that will make it better (other than a rebuild) is this gated shift kit. I didn't realize that it was under $200, so this will be a sooner rather than later upgrade for me now.

porscheboy16 11-06-2003 05:51 PM

Does it block out 1st gear when going from 2nd to 3rd? WHat about blocking 2nd from 5th to 4th?

Steve W 11-06-2003 07:19 PM

I have one in my car and I think it is great. Sherwood did a great job. I does not block you from going into any gear, it just spring centers the lever between the 3 and 4 gear axis, so if you do downshift from 5th, the spring loading of 2nd will tell you that hey you are about to shift into 2nd, wheras the non loaded 4th gear will automatically center there when you pull back the shift lever. Not unlike any standard japanese gearbox.
