Short shift kit available for G50 tranmission?

I haven't had any luck finding one yet. I just bought an 89 911 Carrera this past weekend, and I'm starting to learn about the car. This board is fantastic.

Thanks,

Hans (Atlanta)

Uh, you already have one. It's called the G50.

Seriously, I have never seen a short-shift kit for the G50. Only the 901 and 915.

George,

Uh..okay. ;-)

Just that the throws seems rather long and not very precise. Perhaps I just need to rebuild the shifter linkage with new bushings etc. The car has 142K, so it is probably a good idea!

Thanks.

Hans

Nope, nothing available for the G50 as far as I know. I believe it is because they shortened the throw when they changed over, and because of the design of the shifter for the G50 it is more difficult to change the shifter.

The only one I know about is the Fabcar one. It's more of a racecar deal though ($1500).

Isn't there a "factory" short shift for the G50? I think it came as standard on the Club Sports and is just a stock shift lever that's been shortened by 3/4".

My '88 has option code 243 which lists as a 'Shorter gear shift lever'. This might be the "factory" short shift you're thinking of. I still find the throws a little long.

BTW, anyone know what 'RAFF' leather means?

Yep, I have the "shortened gear shifter" option as well. Adds about 5K to the value of the car. Basically, it eliminates the bare metal of the gear stick between the leather of the shift knob and the leather boot. Feels all right to me.

Hans - this is one of the things that give the 911 its special character. I always laugh when my friends with 993s talk about short shift kits for their cars. I think the best short shift kit for your car is to drive a 930 for a few days - after that your car's shift throw will feel very short.

By the way, the shifting grows on you - even if you sometimes feel like you are driving a school bus. I have even grown to like the long throw 4 speed in my 930.

Raff leather ? suede man.

bsaffin 11-05-2003 05:42 PM

Suede? My seats sure don't look like suede.

Hans,

ZCAT3 is right on. If you've never driven a 930 4 spd, 901 or 915, you may not have the appreciation for the G50.

It's like buttah...

I like the 4 spd shift in our 930 also. It doesn't seem like our throw is that long. But I have to admit...I'm not sure what we have. I was confused when we opened up the box of parts from the previous owners. There was an instruction sheet for a Weltmeister (sp?) short shift kit but we aren't sure if it was ever installed.
