400hp which way
Iam restoring a 81sc and and would like at least 400hp.Which is the best way to get thier.Buying a twin turbo $23k or doing some mods on a single turbo. What year engine should i use if its a single turbo.I would go with a single if the price was right.

Call MM and get an E-Ram and a Cool Collar. This will give you about 450RWHP on a stock SC bottom end.
Don't believe anything the doubters on this shameful BBS will tell you. Your 915 is plenty capable all the way to 700HP.

Following this logic, you can run up to four turbos for 46.

buy a stock 930 engine and spend about 10k extra for the mods and you will have your 400hp.

At what point in your restoring of a $12K car did you decide you had to have a $23K engine?

dc96819,
Try put a little more info in the posts. Like why you chose 400HP and what you are after. 400HP from a twin turbo wont necessarily be the same 400HP from a single turbo. Engines will have different characteristics. Where is the twin turbo engine for $23k? Wouldn't you want more power for that dough. Also, who bothered to rate this thread and why did they chose 3 stars?

Hi Tinton, I rated it 5 stars because it looked for a while like being the most entertaining thing happening here tonight.
Somehow, it got demoted to 3 stars.

This car is like my faveroite shoe hard to part with it. Since 1984 it went from a sc targa to a turbo look then a slant nose then a convertable now a twin turbo but wondered how can i get that to work till i found this site.A single tubro would be fine with a little more than avarage power.Engines for sale

Well, if your talking about 400 flywheel power, meaning roughly 340 to the wheels isn't too bad. You could probably do it for about 10k or so assuming your doing the work yourself. Double that if your going to have a shop do it for you. Change but retain like 8:1 compression, because you don't need high boost to make those numbers. Next port the heads if it's an 80-83. Get rid of the cis and go to some type of stand alone using a 3.2 carrera intake manifold. With that compression, you can probably get a fairly large turbo, and still not have too much lag. Plus there will probably be a lot of little things to take care of as well. All though, even with the aluminum cased 915 it probably won't last very long with that kind of torque and power.
BTW, only reason to go to twin is if you have a fat wallet and are REALLY concerned with lag, otherwise don't bother.

Are you replacing the motor, or do you want to
mod. the one you have? Best case, would be replacing with 3.3 turbo, and add a few goodies. Worst case, tring to build a 400hp n/a SC motor for less than $20K.

From what I understand a '79 turbo motor can be made to put out about 400/450 horse without changing the fuel system radically.
You gonna stick a cage in that thing to tie the front to the back with all of that power?

Buy one from a guy that already has one sorted out for sale, like Roberto of our local PCA here. His puts out an honest 450hp and is a flamethower. It's a white 87 930 3.3 motor with all the upgrades. louce161@comcast.net Email him to see if he hasn't already sold it.

My car is quite a bit of fun to drive with about 205 hp. 250 would be a kick in the pants, particularly if it had carbs and shorter gears.
400 hp is a whole different ball game. A poster above suggested a roll cage which would connect your four shock towers. The reason for this suggestion is that 400 hp will twist one of these cars. That kind of power will put most drivers into the ditch. Also, that kind of power chews up trannies, CV joints, etc. If you have a lot of money and desire a car that race-car-driver-wannabees have no business driving, then......GET A TURBO.
