Vintage Porsches on NBC Today - Saturday

This came to me from a PCA zone rep:

On Saturday, 8am EST, the NBC Today Show will feature 4 Porsche cars from collectors (rare vintage and new models) with Dennis Adler, author of "Porsche, the Road from Zuffenhausen" as speaker.

Yeah, one of them is the sole surviving 901 prototype that I just saw down in Nashville. Fantastic restoration.

I saw something on that 901 prototype this weekend, VERY cool car. Had a 356-looking dash and the SWB, talk about rare...guy bought it from a guy who knew what it was (why the heck would you sell that?)!

Will this be shot in NYC? I'd love to let a dig camera loose on that 901.

Get anywhere near that 901 and the guy will bite your head off. Not the owner, who's a nice guy, but the hired restorer. I dared to touch the dashboard and he said to me, "Do NOT rub the paint!!!" And I was a damn invited guest of PCNA, his [doubtless paid] presence there being for our benefit, ultimately.

Somebody asked him what they washed the car with--it was of course absolutely spotless--and he said that water aof any sort had never so much as touched the car.

Friggin' Q-tippers...

Scrap that trip. It will probably be too early anyway.

I think they featured the owner of that car on Motorweek (or one of the cars shows I caught) last weekend. The owner has a collection of other cars that ewere pretty interesting. Most of the cars he said he'd sell or swap, but never the 911. It was refered to as the second 911 (2nd prototype).

Strictly speaking, it was a 901--built before Peugeot *****ed.

The owner told me he'd gone to Stuttgart to talk to Ferry Porsche about the car (during a trip to Europe for various other reasons), to prepare for a super-accurate restoration, and Ferry's secretary took about 30 seconds to make an appointment for him the following day. Unfortunately, when he got there, Porsche had had to cancel, but he'd set up three engineers to discuss the car with the guy.

"We never made that car," one of the engineers told him. "Look at the sunroof, that's some kind of California bastard." The owner insisted it had been made by Porsche and untouched since, but the engineer was adament. "Not with a sunroof. Never." One of the other engineers said, "Wasn't Hans, down in the bodyshop, over at Werk 1 in 1962, '63?" It was agreed that he was, so they called Hans. "Ja, ja, ve made sunroof," Hans said. So much for the adament engineer.

Well, I just watched the tape. You will have to fast forward through a lot of rubbish to get to the segment. The interviewer was a bit of a doofus - had to ask where was the engine? Whole thing less than five minutes.

The interviewer may not have known that much about the cars, but he did ask how to pronounce the name right, which many do not worry about. He also said that if he had his druthers, he would be driving a Porsche!

I would rather that he know where the engine was and that it was air cooled than to be able to correctly pronounce the name.

I had two people yesterday fascinated at the engine being in the rear. The mail carrier, who saw me adjusting my fuel pressure regulator, and later a young boy with his father where I take my oil to be returned.

It was incredibly lame. I ignored the stupid questions and enjoyed looking at the cars, but it was too short! Kind of like the "911 scene" in the newest Matrix movie!!
