If I can show you a picture can you identify the pistons as E or S? I seem to be bad at attaching pictures but here is the link The pistons http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068588211.jpg |
Those look like 2.2E pistons to me. Let me get home and I'll send you a photo of a 2.2E piston. Keep in mind that after 30-something years, an engine type number is no guarantee of what's actually in the engine.
A quick search would have revealed debates on valve clearance and expert guidance. Such as: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/129883-valve-clearance-1-5mm-intake-1-70-exhaust.html Summary: Some say 1.5/2.0, some say 1.5/1.5. Generally not an issue when using stock pistons and cams in stock combinations, with original deck height. Please tell me that's a photo of disassembly, not assembly. |
I concur,
The pistons look a lot like my E's. |

Note the pic below. 2.2 E piston.
Sounds like you really need to reevaluate your mechanic situation. I'm a clueless newbie but I know how to time cams, look up timing specs, and ID pistons. If your wrench can't do the above, which I've learned from hanging out here, reading a few books, and tinkering with a few engines, then you really gotta wonder how he's going to build a reliable, leak-free engine. Some additional info.
The MFI pump is the 2.2 S pump from the ID numbers on one of the plates (0408 126 009). So the case and pump says "S". The cams have no other markings other than SE and S. Tonight my tech and I looked did another dial on the cam lift on the valves. After four turns around the dial the top lift on the intake showed .448 lift on cylinder 1. Tomorrow he will do the exhaust. What kind of lift would an "E" cam give? I found in an old box that the S engine swap was done on 12-10-82 by "The 911 Shop" in Mooresville N.C. for $200 labor. Wow, that was cheap. ??? I'll call and see if their still around for information on this engine. |
Again with the fresh information.
According to one of the linked posts in this post the early S cam looked like this on lift. (FROM THAT EXCEL FILE) INTAKE 11.36 MM (.44724 inches) EXHAUST 10.05 MM (.39567inches) I know my Intake is .448 inches and I'll see if I can get the Exhaust tonight. So, I have an S case, S MFI, S Cams (likely), how can I be sure on the pistons? Does anyone have pitures of the early "S" pistons? I know the 2.7 S is quite different, but what about the early "S"? Could I have the cam upside down? |
Public retraction! The pistons that I was given, and that I photographed for you in this thread, were described as "2.2E Pistons"
This is INCORRECT! I just helped tear apart a 2.2E today, and their domes and pockets fell neatly in between the piston I photographed for you, and my other set of 2.2T pistons. You would appear to have 2.2S pistons after all! (Congrats). Hope this helps. Sorry to have supplied inaccurate information. |
Hey, that is great news!
OK so, now the last question is the cam timing and why my guy thinks he can't time this engine into the S spec. I'll call me tech today. Thanks, Doug |
Here are the results timing the 2,2S

Sounds peachy. Fire it up!
