911 maintenance $ versus 951
I've read this board for years.
I had concluded that the 911 '79-'89 required SIGNIFICANTLY less maintenance than a 951. Grass is always greener syndrome. I had a discussion with someone whose opinion I respect. He said he didn't believe that to be true. Just different maintenance issues, in his opinion. He works on both. I have to be honest. I was a little disappointed by his comments. What are your thoughts? Assume that the two vehicles receive equal treatment and maintenance over the years. ![]() |

Dissapointed? What exactly do you want to hear? These are old sports cars. They are expensive to maintain unless you do all your own work and get lucky. A lot will depend on the individual car...condition and the previous owner make all the difference.
I think the only generalization you could make is that a turbo system will likely cost a bit more since there is more "stuff" to break. If you want to play, you gotta pay. If you want low maintenance costs, you need a honda/toyota. |

My experience is that the 951 is more expensive in general. The reason is due mainly to the amount of work needed to get at something. Not that a 911 is easy of course. Parts seem to be equal in cost.

One thing I really like about Porsches is the reliability. If you get a good one, just put gas in it and go.
If you get a bad one, it doesn't matter where the engine is located. Get the checkbook out. |

I do know that 911s are much easier to work on than 951s.

Example:
A timming-belt on a 951 is a wear item, which should be replaced often. (or risk destroying the engine) However, this belt is seriously buried under mechanicals. To replace on of these, you had better have all day, and the $pecialized factory tools. OTOH 911s use a double row chain. Maintanance? . . you may want to check it for "stretch" at a qtr-milliion miles.
