Suspension Options
I have a 1969 and I want to convert all the supension over to the 3.5" bolt spacing. I have a set of Carrera fronts, but I am still trying to decide what I want to do in the rears. I know that the turbo trailing arms are out of the question with the amount of fabrication necessary, but I wanted to confirm with everyone that a set of aluminum SC trailing arms will bolt right in. On a follow-up to that question...is there a range of years that I should keep my search within?

They will indeed bolt on.
If you intend to use the factory sway bar, get trailing arms from a '74 or '75. They have the stud-type mount. Later arms have a threaded mount and you will have to use an aftermarket sway bar (maybe a good thing). Also you need to sort out the 6 bolt vs 4 bolt stub axles. Cars through 75.5 have 4 bolt, just like yours. You can use later arms and use your 4 bolt stubs. Some have reported clearance issues with the shocks. I haven't experienced this. Do a search, there have been numerous threads on this topic. Also, I have a set of steel trailing arms from my '73 with 3.5 spacing for sale if you don't need AL. Anyone else need these?

Thanks for the info...I will do a search right now. How much for the steel trailing arms? What year are those from?

Get the rear arms with hubs so you won't have the problem some posters have had recently.
There was a nice article on this swap somewhere a few years ago -- broke down what you have to do for which year cars. It might have been i Euro Car (believe it or not). |

"Some have reported clearance issues with the shocks. I haven't experienced this."
Chuck, On your '73, you shouldn't have any issues with shock clearance. The rear shock tower is smaller up until around '72 or '73. Britain, Converting to the alloy rear control arms requires '74 up shocks which are larger in diameter than the early shocks. Using later control arms also changes the installed angle of the shock slightly. You can partially compensate by removing some material from the control arm shock mount boss. On my '69 (small tower), I had to remove the dust covers so Koni Sports could fit. While not fully addressing CV compatibility issues, there's an article in the April '96 issue of Excellence that covers this upgrade. Sherwood http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |
