Is Zymol worth the money?
With the weather finally breaking hear in the Northeast, It's time for quarterly wax and polish. I have been using Meguire's for years but my neighbor swears by a product called zymol.....
I figured the next time I went to the auto store I'd pick some up but........That stuff is almost 3 times the cost of other wazes and polishes. Is Zymol worth the price?

I don't know if you are looking at the cleaner/wax or the separate items but the high line dealer I bought my garage queen from swears by Zymol.
I've always used Meguiars 3 step on my daily driver with clear coat and it works great. I'm about due to wax it but there's so little dirt on it I'm thinking I don't need to do all three. Has anyone tried the Zymol cleaner/wax?

I tried it and usually buy it at the Sunday flea market for the same cost as Meguiar.
It's O.K. probably more hype then anything else. Last edited by ruf-porsche; 03-26-2004 at 07:26 PM.. |

Thanks Joe, I am looking at the wax and polish separately. I too use the Meguires car cleaner, polish and wax in 3 steps and my car turns out great looking. If there is another level of show shine that Zymol will take it to I'd like to know....

Zymol is a gimick, simply smells nice.

I use the Meguires, if you have the time, there is not much better for home use.

I use it and get extremely good results. To really see the quality of this wax though it should be applied and removed with an orbital buffer. I use a 6" 24.00$ single hand buffer that most all auto parts stores carry. My Ho shines!

With 2 cars in the garage, 2 more cars on the way home with my college students, I can see them passing over the Meguires and picking up the Zymol to wax their cars. At $50.00 a pop for an 8 ounce jar I can't justify the return on the money.

Do some research on serious detailing internet forums.
Zymol is crap compared to some of the good stuff out there. I hear a lot of good things about Zaino.

I've been using 3M Show Car Wax with good results. At $11 a bottle, it's pretty cheap, goes on easy and makes a long-lasting shine!

Any wax is better than no wax.
I use Turtle Wax (non-abrasive for clear coats), Nu-Finish, whatever... it all makes the car look shiny and nice. For the holidays, the wife bought me a nice orbital buffer and Griots wax products. The orbital is amazing, but I can't tell a difference between the Griots and Turtle Wax. Maybe I am nuts...

Banned but not out, yet..

Two words: Liquid Glass. The stuff is phenominal. I was a Meguires user for years (3-step) but this stuff is far better. It's not available at your local auto-parts but you can get it through Tweeks. It contains no wax and truly makes your paint look like glass. Great stuff.

I can't stand Zymol - PITA to put on and get off - my driveway still has marks from when I waxed with Zymol. I have a new product from a friend that does detailing called butter wax - he bought so much stuff for his friends that the owner of the company wanted to hire him. You can wax in sunlight. If you want the rest of my Zymol you are welcome to it.

I've used Zymol and it is OK - not worth the money IMHO. I am a Zaino fan - great stuff.

The only reason that I have Zymol is that I found a whole Zymol kit for sale at Target for thirty dollars. Came with wax, soap, wax applicator, some leather treatments and was in a nice wood box. Aside from it smelling really nice I havent noticed it being any different than the wax I use on my Jetta, Meguires. I asked Kevin at AI&R what he suggested and he simply said Turtle Wax because you can buy the wax in the same color as your paint or pretty close to it. When you get scratches the wax can build up in them and show a different color than the paint, other than that he said they are all pretty much alike.

Even though I prefer Meguiars 3-step, can anyone tell me if there is a onestep wax that is good for a decent wash/wax when the whole process isn't needed? The paint is close to concours so I don't want to ruin it with some cheap stuff. Doesn't the orbital buffer add swirl marks?

If the cars exposed to the elements regularly, It's hard to beat Meguiar's #26 yellow or Gold Class for durability, especially with a clear coat prep. If the car's a garaged and covered Princess, try the Zaino; it looks spectacular!
