SC with window trim chrome

I was wondering if anyone has seen an SC with door and window trim in "chrome". I've also heard folks talk about backdating their SC but I don't think I've seen a finished version. Some have also mentioned doing the same to their Carrera.

Thoughts??

n8marx 11-11-2003 08:13 AM

My understanding was that '78 and '79 SCs could be had from the factory with either black or chrome trim. From '80 on I believe black was the only option.

CarreraS2 11-11-2003 08:15 AM

Some of the early SC's came like that. I've seen 'em.

I think it looks pretty cool. A little different. The "new" body style, but with a little bit of a tie to the past.

Up until the 1980 model year, chrome was actually the standard equipment, and the black trim was optional. However, it seems only some of the early '78s were actually shipped to the US that way - the rest were shipped with the optional black trim.

CarreraS2 11-11-2003 08:17 AM

Also, the trim was different in more than color.

The chrome trim was some kind of chrome plated steel, the black trim was anodized aluminum.

rickeolis 11-11-2003 08:20 AM

Jeez I'm trying to do just the opposite.

I like the black out look, but in '69 it wasn't exactly an option.

Although I must admit, BB2 is a fine looking car, I wonder what it would look like without the chrome at all.

CHILI 11-11-2003 08:25 AM

I've seen some, but I think chrome window trim needs chrome mirrors. I'm not sure I like the look of chrome with the SC mirrors. They're too bulky looking for the classic look. Here's a pic of my car with chrome. Not an SC, but it's a 74, so you can at least see the look with flares and correct bumpers.

I've got one. I can't say I really like it too much, but my gf does  http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068571552.jpg

FWIW, Some of the black window trim, on my 81, is "black chrome" just as the door is . . .not anodized.

CHILI 11-11-2003 08:28 AM

I guess that pic doesn't show the chrome very well. This might be better.

As part of my backdate, I want to chrome my anodized aluminum trim/frame! I am in the hunt for the early winged door frames, and chrome quarter window frames.

My frames now are not matching anyway. If someone wants to trade, e-mail me. The anodizing can be redone from what I hear.

Can I chrome the aluminum?

I agree, chrome only looks good on the early car with chrome mirrors. The flag mirror looks very out of place on my car with the rockers removed. You have to have all the 80's trim to make the flag mirrors look right...I'm not headed that way.

cassisrot 11-11-2003 08:39 AM

IMHO, chrome trim begs for polished fuchs, and in my case an SS Targa Bar. I'm not sure what to think about the headlight rims. These cosmetic decisions are so tough!

DonDavis 11-11-2003 08:39 AM

My next car will have to have chrome. And to be fair to myself, I have to look at SCs. I am an early car guy but the SC can bring a LOT to the table. I knew that the window trim was aluminum but didn't know the earlier ones were steel. What I should've asked was "Has anyone removed the anodizing and polished their trim?" Or something to that effect. It would be a lot of detail work but hey!

More pics?

My early 78 SC has the chrome trim, looks pretty good on a black car. Be careful though the "chroming" takes on a purplish hue if you use regular chrome polich..Wenol will remove the purple tint and it stays bright for months!

rickeolis 11-11-2003 11:31 AM

Raynald- So what are you going to do with the black? I may put a bid in when you're ready. Please keep it in mind, thanks-

Chas911 11-11-2003 12:26 PM

Hey DonDavis. I have a 79 SC with chrome window trim that I am going to have to sell. I always thought it would be a great car to backdate. The car is a color most people (including me) are not very fond of. I will need paint it a different color if I sell it to the masses. But I hate to that if I don't have to.

jstgermaine 11-11-2003 12:30 PM

I have all of the door chrome trim off of my 77...I want black. If any of you out there still want to trade...

MotoSook 11-11-2003 12:35 PM

Dang it Jerry! Why the fudge didn't you say something the last time I saw you!

I want chrome! Can we talk?

jstgermaine 11-11-2003 12:37 PM

...lemme guess...you got rid of your black trim already...

What do you have in mind? Shoot me an email.

DonDavis 11-11-2003 06:35 PM

Chas911 (Chuck) I sent you a PM.

Anyone have more pics and/or details of the trim thing/backdating?

farleyd 11-11-2003 06:50 PM

Here is my 1978 chrome trimmed Targa with s/s Targa bar. It now sports Euro H4 assemblies.

Bob's Flat-Six 11-11-2003 06:56 PM

Hey Don,
We Sat at the same table at the resturant in Malibu.
Funny that you should be thinking SC. I've been looking at earlier 911's and may go there but I agree with your statement that SC's bring a lot to the table.
:)

Bob's Flat-Six 11-11-2003 06:58 PM

WOW! That's a beauty

cantdrv55 11-11-2003 07:00 PM

Hey FarleyD,

What color is your '78SC? I was thinking of going chrome on my copper brown '79 Targa but didn't know how it would look. Your car's paint looks like mine.

DonDavis 11-11-2003 07:50 PM

Bob! My man! How are you? To my right or straight across?

I have to admit. When I go to these Porsche functions, my mind gets goofy and I just gawk at the cars and miss things like introductions......names......Jenifer Aniston bumping into my chair, etc. You know, the usual stuff.
We had a great trip and hope to be back early next year.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. SCs are great cars and if it were not for the emissions thing, I might give a little more love that way. However, I love the early stuff ridiculously. For instance, at the Phoenix Flight show.... I ended up talking with the owner of this beautiful 71T for close to an hour. I essentially 'glanced at' so many other cars that had SO much more history and were much more special. Why is that? I think its just an illness.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068612569.jpg

We'll see.

DanTheCat 11-11-2003 09:50 PM

So, all you guys with the early cars and black trim -- How did you get the trim black? Is it just painted, or did you get it finished some other way? (was black an option before the SC's?) I have an SC with black trim (which I want to keep) but I would love to fit the rear wing windows. I would want the trim to reasonably match the look of the rest of my trim. I saw an early car with black trim, but it was painted and wouldn't look too good next to the anodized trim.

Dan :)

Bob's Flat-Six 11-12-2003 01:53 AM

Don,
I almost said in my reply where I was sitting but thought I would test you, And you passed.

I'm not as interesting as 911's but Jenifer Aniston? Hmmmm, Oh yeah you were facing the wrong direction. And she probable isn't as interesting anyway but she did have nice? Hmmm, Headlights.
I think they where H1's, nice and bright.

I was to your right, and HughR was straight across from you. I'm not sure who the other guy was but I think he has a black 911 with big wheels on it and posts here once in a while.

farleyd 11-12-2003 04:22 AM

Bob Flat-Six, the car is effectively Copper Brown Metallic. I am getting used to it, alwaus wanted a blue one, but that one was a good buy at 9K. Pics of yours?

Bob's Flat-Six 11-12-2003 05:21 AM

Here's a pic, Farley
It's an 80 and has the slightly faded black anodized window trim.

And Don, If your set on the early years don't make sacrifices get an early 911. Try to dial it in as close as you can to the dream :)

An exception to this would be to get a 911 ride until you can make the more expensive 911 happen.

a 78 w/ chrome trim.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068653017.jpg

Leland Pate 11-12-2003 07:07 AM

I think it depends on the car.
SOme really look good with chrome trim whiole others desperately need black anodised trim.

DonDavis 11-12-2003 07:15 AM

I'm trying to imagine k911sc car with the chrome flag mirror.

rpiper 11-12-2003 09:11 AM

chrome trim SC

Here's my 78SC Copper Brown Metallic with chrome trim. I love the look of the SC with chrome. Very old school, but in a relatively modern package. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068660703.jpg

rickeolis 11-12-2003 09:39 AM

That red coupe really needs the black trim!

Is there anyone else who wants to trade my chrome trim for their black? I'm game.

rpiper 11-12-2003 09:57 AM

just fyi, the chrome pop out quarter windows on the early cars do not easily fit in to the later openings. The "B" pillars need to be slotted and a nutsert put in to hold the leading edge of the window.

Raynald 11-12-2003 10:00 AM

mine will be avalable when i will finish my swap...
it is steel with black paint on, not alu. anodised ,and windshield trim is one piece black rubber trim same of rear glass, handles is black painted
quarters glass frame is painted too
Ray

juanbenae 11-12-2003 10:31 AM
