MSD/Crane Mounting Locations

Anyone have pictures of how/where you mounted you MSD or Crane CDI box?

How about in a Turbo?

Thanks,
DLG

where do you want to put it?

rear, left side?

cowtown 11-11-2003 02:22 PM

I put a Crane HI-6 and coil in the stock location for my 930 project. (It's a non-intercooled engine, though. I don't know if that makes any difference in the amount of clearance you have). I did have to adapt the sheetmetal bracket by cutting and drilling. Not great pictures, but you get the idea. The coil is above the CDI box.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068592845.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068592863.jpg

Thanks for the pics. Very tidy! I have a couple relays/boxes that hinder using this type mounting. One is the "over run" or "run on" relay, (don't know the correct name of it.) I'm not sure about the other box but I thought it was a voltage regulator?

I have a pic of Blown/Dean's MSD.. it's a pretty clean install....Ron

It looks like the fuel filter and accumulator have been moved to make more room.

These are someone's(not mine) recent install pictures.(I'm not sure if they wanted their name mentioned so I didn't) I like this location.

I can't be confusing a newbie, LOL.. all he's doing is a simple box install,.. and that's a maybe.......Ron

I fabbed a plate that mounted on my shocks threaded shafts. The holes needed to be slotted, but the space was plentiful and the mounting plate was a peice of cake. I recall hearing about somebody selling a production version, but never found the source.

dean 11-11-2003 04:59 PM

That is in an SC. I don't remember having to move the filter and accu. But I could have. I do remember that it was a PITA and it took some time to get it too fit

Power posted pics of where my MSD is mounted. This is in a 73E. Anyway, it went in fairly fast and painless.

stevef 11-12-2003 03:43 AM

Although not a turbo I fabricated a kiss plate to pick up on the original CDI box mount holes, then mounted the MDS box to that. Don't have any extra holes and can always go back to CDI as a back up.

Not exactly the same but I've got a pair of Crankfire Coil-packs mounted IN the cabin on the rear bulkhead.

I obviously cannot raise the rear seats, put that's not a problem as my 3 year-old prefers the front seat anyway... It's easier for him to say "pass him!"

<and before anyone loses their ***** over the 3 year-old in the front seat:

[1] The car does not have an airbag
[2] It does have a full cage with beefy side impact bars
[3] He's in a car seat that uses a 5-point harness
[4] I've connected the child-seat to the passengerside seat using 4 of the 5 points from a Simpson harness set, pulled tight against 4 welded anchor points.

Randy..
It's not an exact answer but,

My MSD, 6M-2, pn.6460 instructions says it's OK to mount in any position

dean 11-13-2003 03:47 AM

I think my instructions said the only way not to mount it is with the bottom up ie the logo on the bottom. But I can't read so who knows

It's a bit of a long detail story, but I'll try.

My latest neurosis.
The engine comp elec was based on keeping the CD box with clean electric. Even though the only computer is the CHT & EGT gauge, the CD elec has to be very good. [The computer is grounded at the engine.]. The front bulkhead panel is for carb fuel lines, regulator, filter, etc. The .080 thick preforated metal has 1/4in holes and threaded rivits are used for mounting the components.

So 8ga AWG from big starter lug hot goes to new marine fuse & buss bar. The MSD hot goes in direct contact with starter hot wire connector at buss bar.

2 seperate grounds.
Stock left inner fender/comp liner ground and 8 AWG from under car chassis ground to fender lug. The buss bar 8 AWG ground feed lug comes from being positioned between the inner fender ground and the under car feed lug. . The MSD ground is positioned in direct contact with the chassis feed lug at the buss.
The MSD unit is the marine version. If it's good enough for the pounding and engine compartment heat of ocean racers it's good enough for me. And marine electrics has to pass higher standards than auto electrics.

Staying with the program is the engine comp starter jump. A hot from the buss goes to a marine momentary 10amp button that triggers a 75amp Bosch relay. The relay has a 10 AWG red feed from the buss. The relay has a 10 AWG yellow output to the starter solenoid. The left button that is above the red light is a momentary on to check water level in the 2 micron marine fuel filter. If red lite triggers then the sensor is conducting thru water.. It's not hooked up now cause I'm not sure if I wanted it?

CD box and coil is on rubber vibration feet. The stock elec panel has stock inner fender vibration mounts. The new preforated metal panel has 1/8 fuel line sliced to line the outer edges to act as vibration mounts and is secured with small diameter safety wire every few inches.

Naturally all of the above is with 24kt gold wire connectors.

The rest of fuse panel will be C2 motorized spoiler, big watt rear back up lite solenoid to prevent backing into forest trees[again] , fog machine, engine comp lite, etc.

Some of ideas that were incorporated were triggered by Loren and Warren .........Ron
