it's smashed...how bad?

I will post pics later, but a large Chevy Suburban backed into the front of my 911.

Damage: As a quick look the headlamps are smashed but not broken (?) and the bumper is pushed back, and the drivers side fender well is bent/buckled.

What should I do as far as an inspection? Porsche dealer or body shop?

:(

Silveresrty911S 11-13-2003 01:42 AM

K9

Probably both as long as it's a reputable body shop. Sorry to hear about your B Gruppe Baby getting hurt. Maybe upgrades "while your in there":D
Rick

k9handler 11-13-2003 02:08 AM

well I just want to make sure everything is checked...don't want to find something after the fact.

After taking a closer look and some pictures I think I may have escaped with only minor stuff...but who knows.

Oh man! That Sucks! Time for Carbon Fiber...

expat 11-13-2003 02:30 AM

Damn! Sorry for your misfortune, although not too bad in the scheme of things I guess. Hope you get the compensation you need to get the job done right.

Porsche 11-13-2003 02:38 AM

Oh the pain... I hope he is paying for it...

k9handler 11-13-2003 02:55 AM

well the smasher was operating a US Goverment vehicle...and my insurance co states that since it was a GOV that the deductable ($500) will not be covered if I file through them...instead they tell me I should go direct with the goverment legal office for the claim.

Damn it....someone will pay!

72 four door 11-13-2003 03:23 AM

O the red tape blues sorry to hear about that,at least you werent hurt, see if you can get them to repaint it too.

k9handler 11-13-2003 03:31 AM

I have an appointment with the Porsche Zentrum here in Kaiserslautern. They told me on the phone that if repairs are out of the norm for them I will have to seek a body shop. They did say that they have a claims rep locally from my insurance co and that he would complete the estimate...that might suck!

My guess is probably 1000 euro for labor at least!
And then the cost of parts? What do you guys think?

MotoSook 11-13-2003 03:49 AM

Crap Smitty. Sorry this has happened to you, but it doesn't look that bad. Perhaps, it's time to BACKDATE!

evren 11-13-2003 04:03 AM

sorry to hear this -- definitely time for a CF long hood, though!

Rot 911 11-13-2003 05:03 AM

Smitty, you are looking at $2500 parts and labor is my guess.

k9handler 11-13-2003 05:11 AM

thanks all

Kurt, that would be my low end guess since the euro rate sucks and the shops here charge over 100 euro per hour labor.

The kicker is I don't have the rental car option in my coverage (WTF?) so I am going to have to pay that and then get the money for it from the government.

Rot 911 11-13-2003 05:12 AM

Smitty, don't you have USAA? My USAA tow and rental coverage per car is only like $15.00 per year.

Moses 11-13-2003 05:37 AM

Sorry to hear about that. Bad break. Think carefully about changes you might want before going forward. Painted trim rings? Different bumper?

Good luck. Glad you're not hurt.

cassisrot 11-13-2003 05:44 AM

Smitty, my condolences. When my 69E was bent by an NSU tt, I took it to Porsche in Zuffenhausen and they fixed it better than new. Complete repaint, S front bumper and all new gaskets, etc. Of course that was 30 years ago so they may not have a body shop anymore but it is something for you to explore.

johncj8989 11-13-2003 07:25 AM

That sux. When I had my 944 a lady in a hairnet and a giant Suburban backed right over the top of me in my Daughters school parking lot. I just had the car repainted like 4 weeks prior. Needless to say the damage was 3600.00 on mine. Hardly left a scratch on her trailer hitch.

BACKDATE TIME!:D

rickeolis 11-13-2003 08:21 AM

Smitty, turn this into a good thing:

Remember that gold Mercury Tracer that my wife and I use for work? Some guy hit the rear quarter panel one afternoon while my wife was in town, barely scuffed the paint, and one minor dent. We got a check free and clear for $1300.00 a week later!

Have a few high-end estimates done at reputable places, then submit the highest one in at the Government’s claims agency and wait for their offer, I agree it should be high considering the entire replacement of the panel, paint, and headlamp replacement.

Then, when you get this fat check, but a used fender off this board, and use the rest of that check to have one badda$$ paint job done to your car!

thrown_hammer 11-13-2003 08:23 AM

By bada$$ I assume you mean flatblack...

rickeolis 11-13-2003 08:25 AM

GruppeB rules!

That's right, like the pic Smitty posted on OUR board Shawn!

Wuf wuf...

rickeolis 11-13-2003 08:54 AM

A bit OT:

Smitty,
Have you seen this? I don't know where you are on your tranny search...

Sorry to hear your car's been tweaked, H.D.. But, I think I'll have to throw in with your fellow GroupBees and suggest that it's time for a BACKDATE. :D

Norm Faustino 11-13-2003 06:09 PM

Why the hell are we paying insurance! so they can run and find the loopholes to not have to pay your claim! I swear to god I hate big fat domestic SUV's and big fat insurance companies. No wonder people commit fraud against them.

Jack Olsen 11-13-2003 06:14 PM

Ouch! Sorry to hear about it, Smitty.

If you decide to backdate, I've got a steel long hood that I'll donate for the cost of shipping (although it might be prohibitive to ship?).

Good luck with the negotiating, in any case. Life's too short drive, or share the road with, SUV's.

Thanks all...
I have been thinking about how I am going to go about the repairs, and mods are running through my mind!

My first thought was the IROC style bumper...not too expensive and could be soaked up in the cost if done right, but then again my bumper does not appear to be tweaked at all (just scratched up).

As for the quarter panel...could I get them cheaper in as a pair? Say backdated? Then I would have to consider the hood and yet another bumper option.

Most of all...I would love to get the car painted! What would the chance be of them not matching the paint and it really looking like ass?

Oh...and a ducktail for sure!

I guess I will have to wait and see.

Adam 11-13-2003 08:59 PM

Oh crap! That's terrible... Could have been much worse, though. I was worried about a high-speed autobahn incident when I saw the topic!

Don't trust just any panel shop with a yellow, middle-year, Gruppe B steed, Smitty! :D

When my car was cracked up by a bimbo in a Civic, my panel guy (who was a heavy drinker - but a family friend), painted my car in totally the wrong colour. It was Talbot yellow and lemon yellow... Needless to say, it's all good now, but only after a total respray.

My advice: Put it in a container, send it to Kevin! :p

K9, For the life of me I can't remember if this place was in Ramstein Village or not but my insurance agent there worked at the local Volvo/BMW dealership just outside of the base. Unfortunately I can't remember which town. It wasn't Einseidlerhof but in the Landstuhl direction. the reason I mention my agent is that I had my BMW backed into once and then later rear ended on base. Both times the insured that hit it were with a company that was a susidiary of the company I was with (so same agent). Both times they sent me to a body shop that was just across the road and up the street from them. This guy was purportedly one of the best in the area. Maybe you can do a little research and find this place and check them out..they did great work on my BMW. Just wish after 10 years into retirement I could remember the location for you. Good luck from a fellow SF member.

k9handler 11-13-2003 10:32 PM

Thanks Howie

My insurance co is USAA and they reccomend a shop in Landstuhl for the repair...but my gut feeling is to get a couple estimates and then go from there. Here in about 1 hour I will have the Porsche Zentrum (Dealer) look at it.
They (Porsche) did tell me they have contact with a USAA rep in the area, and they can also refer me to a few places they sometimes use for repairs outside their scope.

Like Adam said, if the paint don't match it's not really worth it!:(

So do you think a total respray would be too much to ask for?

k9handler 11-14-2003 12:43 AM

well it's going to get repaired by the Porsche Zentrum possibly as early as next week. Cost...more than I thought it would be.
Now as for paint, Porsche is going to buff the entire vehicle to get a best color match prior to paint. When I discussed the fact the paint would not blend well and look fresh he stated "we will paint as much as we need to make the repair invisible" so it looks like the baby ***** yellow will be the color!

As for the rental car, which one do I choose? 996 Turbo, 993 Turbo, Boxster, Cayenne? Ha Ha...I will probably end up with the VW Golf.

I can vouch for this man's anguish. Adam, when I saw your respray I thought it was two colours away from getting a flame job.

carreradpt 11-14-2003 10:12 PM

Sorry to hear of your plight Smitty. I was going to say if you needed some body panels I could get them there (GE) pretty cheaply for you, (if you know what I mean). Just get them to TCM and I could do the rest. Sounds like you are going to be taken care of. Good luck, DT
