Dansk SS drone, What to do?

Installed a set of SSI exchangers this weekend with a Dansk 2in 1 out painted SS banana muffler correct for a '74 car in my '79SC. I had read about mufflers droning in certain RPM ranges before but had never really expected to hear it from a stock muffler. It sounds like a UFO between 2-3k RPM. I have never driven an early car before, do they sound like this? There isn't an exhaust leak. What can I do about this noise besides getting a new muffler.

What exactly do you mean by drone? I have a Dansk 2 in 1 out on my '73 with stock exchangers and I have never noticed anything strange about the exhaust sound.

Well I would say it sounds more like a high pitched howl in that rev range. But it's not a good howl. I liked it for about 20 seconds and then it became annoying. Kind of tough to describe, actually.

My car is currently up on stands in the garage, but I may try to start it up this evening just to see if there is anything strange in that range. I have never noticed it, but I must say I like the sound much better above 4k. Does it happen only on acceleration, or also just cruising in that range?

Rob,

It occurs both in acceleration and cruising. If it only did it under acceleration it would be alright, but it's actually louder just driving around. It'll stop when I lift off the gas. I put it on at Millersport this past weekend I'll be heading back there to let Chuck drive it and to hear what he thinks about it.

You do need to get it sorted so that you are happy with it. I love the sound of mine, especially when whipping around the back roads in Chatham County out near Jordan Lake. Mine is not all that loud at lower rpm's, but does have a nice sound. There is actually a point (probably a bit above 3k) where I can cruise in 4th gear and the exhaust is almost quiet.

I hope it is something that is easily fixed.

Maybe your car needs a priest.
My SC has the same setup, and there is *no* drone; just beautiful music.

I wonder if one of the baffles is loose?

Some muffs just have a resonance at a certain rpm....I tiried more than a few muffs prior to choosing the Dansk. Maybe Hans had a bad day and there is a loose baffle or something off kilter.....

Send it back get another, try another manufacturer,,,,,,make sure a heat shield in YOUR car is not loose and the change in harmonics does not casue it to vibrate.
