Hi folks. Yes, I'm still on this kick to maybe get a 308. I saw this one on eBay the other day:
The description seems perfect - too perfect, and I'm not inclinded to drive all the way to Fresno, just to look at it, unless it's a done-deal or close to a done deal. Anyone in that area want to go take a look? I would assume a perk would be that you get to drive it. Lemme know if anyone is interested - wayne@pelicanparts.com Thanks! -Wayne P.S. Good starting points for looking for cars: www.hemmingsmotornews.com www.autotrader.com www.ferrarimarketletter.com (or the PML - Porsche market letter)

Wayne,
If you ever consider a non-local car, a friend of mine is selling his (1st owner) as-perfect-as-they-get 308 GTSi. He's a very successful physician/surgeon and is a car nut. In other words he has the resources and the interest to keep the car in perfect condition. Perhaps a bit of negotiation will get you to where you want regarding price. http://www.hemmings.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/classifieds.cardetail/id/2012002

A clutch and major service for this car in my area is 8200! So if this car just had that work done - its a good savings for the next owner. Good luck.

Yup, the clutch service would be good to save on. I have to agree with you on the right height - although I think it looks much worse in photos than in actual real life.
As for your friend's GTSi QV, I think I really want a pre-1980s carb car. Not only do they have more HP, but I can easily get replacement parts for the carbs. Ever wonder what a fuel distributor for a 308 costs? ![]() Thanks, Wayne

FD....big bucks on any car. Can't imagine a Ferrari. However, it is most likely made by Bosch (KJetronic) and can be rebuilt by any number of places.

Ok, just looked it up. The 308 Fuel Distributor is ... get this .... $1000 cheaper than for my lowly 1985 380sl.

I've looked and researched 308s and pricing for the last couple years.
That car is definately not in the "too good to be true" category. 33K is not particularly low miles for a 308, and anything north of $25K for a carbed 33K mile 308 is not a steal. Not a rip off, but fully priced in today's market for a carbed car. Definately don't need to worry yourself that it is "too good to be true." I'd personally focus only on the 4 valve 83-85 cars, but to each their own . . . |

Wayne, Aren't you the CIS guru of gurus? I'd guess that the 308 system is similar to the 911's. Just use the CIS troubleshooting/parts database wizard you're building.

Nah, Bob's the CIS guru - he's much better at diagnosing that stuff than I am. I'm just good at writing...

It's maybe an extra $5-8K, but you'll get that right back (maybe more) when you sell it. The market is very soft for these cars, but has at least some demand for the injected 4V cars. One of the reasons is that people find and ask a mechanic about the cars BEFORE buying them, and the vast majority of mechanics tell their customer to avoid all the 2V cars. The injection system is good old reliable German CIS, as used in millions of cars from Rabbits to, well, Ferraris. No known headaches just because it is used in a Ferrari. It's reliable and easy to work on in an SC, just as it is in a 308. |

Personally, I'd go for an '85. But that's just me.

Wait....the 2v cars are the SCs and the 4v cars are the Carreras.
Now it's becoming clear ;-)
