Engine Drop - Whole Car Up
 

Is there any reason I can't raise the whole car up to drop the engine? I have some front end work to do as well so I'd like the car all the way up.

If you are just using jack stands the biggest problem will be that you need to have the rear of the car about 36" off the ground. This is 24" at the torsion bar covers with the front tires on the ground. If you lift the front end up you will reduce the rear to front angle of height and thereby be forced to jack the rear of your car up even higher!

We (the NoVA gang) typically jack the rear up part way to allow us to work underneath to disconnect everything. Then we support the engine with a motorcycle/ATV jack and the tranny with with a tranny jack. Next, we unbolt the motor/tranny mounts and lower them all the way. Finally we jack the rear of the car up until we can roll out the engine transaxle out from under the car. Like Kurt said, you won't have engough clearance with the front jacked up.

Just get some ton jack stands and jack it up to the max. That will do the job, front and back. Buy a couple stands extra for your safety.

After screwing around with the engine on the floorjack I came to my senses and cut the tail off of a $20 junky skateboard and screwed some blocks into it to hold the engine on the board.

It rolls extremely smoothly and you just tilt the engine to steer it. It took about 90 seconds to roll the engine/tranny out of the garage, into the driveway and get the motor correctly positioned to start jacking it back into the car. There was no cussing required!

Why not just keep the motor on the "PorscheBoard", fabricate some gears and belts to the "PB" rear wheels, a small gas tank/battery and a saddle over the engine for the driver?

On lowered Carrera's at least, if you don't have the front up a little (on planks or ramps) the spoiler will be pushed hard into the garage floor when you lift the rear.

I was wondering about the front chin spoiler as I have a 930 that is not that high off the ground to begin with. How high at the torsion bars do you need to get the car with the front off at the lowest settings for jackstands or on ramps underneath the fronts.?
