You Make The Call...

After battling my wife for two years about an air cooled 911. I finally got agreement yesterday.

I'd been looking at a pretty nice '84 coupe.

Then she says..."gee I'd like to see you get something newer."

Is this a trick? No, she really means it. She says, "what about a 2000 or 2001, or a Boxster S?" I say, "well I really want an air cooled "

Well, you think I'd jump on the '84, and be done with it, before she changes her mind. But windows of opportunity don't come around very often.

Time could work against me if I wait.

You make the call. What would you do? :)

No brainer. 993

If you want aircooled, & she wants something "newer"

You need to show her a 1998 993 C2s,
or how about a 91-94 911 Turbo

993 is the choice of many....A Boxster is a chick's car, and I don't care if it's an "S" or a stick..... .

Why not 86- Carrera? G50 box and no CIS...it's like SC minus crappy shifting and plus 30 horsepower.

masraum 11-15-2003 09:26 AM

Yep, go newer, they were aircooled until '98. 993 would be nice, or even 964 which would probably be a bit of a compromise between the <'89 and the >'95.

You could always see just how far she is willing to let you go...sell the house...get a new twin turbo:D

jester911 11-15-2003 11:00 AM

Actually the 86 was the last year of the 915 tranny.
87 went to the G-50.

But hey, I have an 86 and I think it is great.

I think it is just a personal choice. I tend to lean more to the older cars.

Of course, if you really can spend the bucks go for the new GT3.:D

moazam 11-15-2003 11:07 AM

Definitely 993.

Don't forget to add several hundred more pounds to lug around. :D

I also really like 993s. I wouldn't get a C4, though. C2S all the way!!! Well, except for the turbo. I would do many unspeakable things to get my hands on a special edition '97 turbo4S...

993 is the way to go if yer looking for a newer porsche ..

cicsprog 11-15-2003 12:45 PM

Let me know if you get a divorce. I need a reasonable spouse. Go 993.

Az911 11-15-2003 12:46 PM

If you want a newer 911 skip the c2 and just go for the 993. They are awsome cars. Anyways here is a pic of my 96

Just score one of these!! it's a bad ass 993 twin turbo.. will (promise ) ya smoke most any of the newer porsche on the road, and looks 100 times better . Your wife won't let ya keep it after she sees all the chickeetahs that are giving ya looks though.
hahahahah!

You have to ignore your wife. It may be too late since you are already listening to her. But what does she care what you drive? Mine doesn't get involved. She likes most stuff I bring home. Newer isn't always better. The raw feel will be gone in anything newer than let's say 89.

Why not get a 2003 Boxster or 996 and "backdate" the motor to the air cooled one the porsche gods originally intended it to have?

:D

Quicksilver 11-15-2003 03:16 PM

Whatever you decide I would really look at getting a car with the G50 trans. Drive a G50 and a 915 back to back and there is no comparison. I have an 87, which I love (first year of G50) but I think you have a great opportunity to "compromise" on a 993.
Good luck!

Funny how wifes don't all approve of Porsches.
I feel lucky that mine does as she had a father who was into sports cars. Kind of like father like daughter? I don't know? But it does seem that if the parents did it too it's OK.
You poor guy's who have trouble getting approval now are laying the ground work for the next generation as your daughters will probably approve of Porsches whole heartedly.

I'm a bit biased, but a 993 is a great choice -> especially the C4S! The 3.2 Carreras are GREAT cars, though. I'm still very happy with my '86.
