Help Alternator and Run-On problem/
 

Alright guys heres the deal i Have all new MSD ignition new coil and new voltage regulator. When the regulator is hooked up when you turn the ignition off the car keeps on trying to run.

With the regulator disconnected the car shuts of as it is suppose to. I was told that this could be a problem with the alternator and the Alternator should be taken out of the car tested and then rebuilt? Can anyone advise me and give me some suggestions?

There is NO reason why, when you turn off the key, the car should continue to run because of anything relating to the alternator.

I assume you have a 6AL box, and you have deleted the BHKZ (CDI) box? The small red wire goes to the ignition switch. The orange and black wires fire the coil. There is no reason why any of this stuff should be connected anywhere near the wires going to or from the voltage regulator.

I think maybe what happened is somebody connected the red wire for the MSD box (+12v switched from ignition switch) to the blue wire at your voltage regulator connection. With the ignition on and voltage regulator installed, current from the warning light flows to the regulator and then into the rotor, magnetizing it. AT THE SAME TIME IT IS ALSO PUTTING POWER TO YOUR MSD BOX. The engine starts and runs. Then when you turn off the key, the warning lamp circuit is opened, but it doesn' t matter, because you are getting power from the alternator through the blue wire that is feeding back in the other direction!

The only way to fix it is to download the factory wiring diagram and put everything back the way it is supposed to be. You want the red wire for the MSD to be connected to the wire that used to power the CDI box. Everything else should be per the factory diagram.

Hmmmm... Thank you!! this isnt going to be fun at all. The rear part of the engine was rewired and im not sure if those wires are still red blue etc.

If i take some pictures of how its currently set up mabey you could point me in the right direction.

I'll be damned. Here it is:

ENGINE RUN-ON
If your engine continues to run even when the ignition is turned Off you are experiencing engine Run-On. This usually only occurs on older vehicles with an external voltage regulator.
Because the MSD receives power directly from the battery, it does not require much current to keep the unit energized. If you are experiencing run-on, it is due to a small amount of voltage going through the charging lamp indicator and feeding the small Red wire even if the key is turned off.

Ok i've found a few things out. I did place the diode but my alterator light on the dash still doesnt light up ... I thought it was due to the voltage regulator being disconnected? When i connected the voltage regulator and turned the ignition on the light didnt GO ?? Any suggestions?

Would i install the diode on the green line from the voltage regulator that runs to the alternator and to the dashboard light?

Here's some more info:
3 wires that run from the voltage regulator are :
"Green"
which runs to the alternator and the light on the dash.
"red"
Which connects to the brown line that runs to the alternator
Black which connects to the black line in the harness presum ground:

Currenty the diode is installed on the green line?

When i connected the Voltage regulator i didnt have any run on problems but a half an hour of driving did drain the batteries so the car would not start again. and still no light on the dash when i turn the ignition on?
