Oil level gauge at the top, poss. oil level sender unit problem?

On my way to work this AM, I noticed the oil level was all the way up to the top of the gauge. I pulled over and checked the dipstick and it was ok. I happened to check the dipstick last night on my routine check after I got home and it was fine and I don't think I bumped anything. (Also wanted to make sure no evil gremlins added oil while I was asleep!)

When I turn off the engine, the gauge level goes down, but it shoots straight up to the top when the I turn on the ignition. I noticed during my drive that the temp and oil pressure gauges seemed to function normally.

After searching and reading some past threads, I think I need to check the connections or replace the oil sender unit. Yes?/NO? Thanks everyone!!

Oh I did have the chain tensioner upgrade and some oil tubes replaced about two weeks ago, maybe something was initially losened then?

Thanks!!

an open circuit, like the wire off, or a bad sender will peg the gauge as described. take the wire off and ground it to the case, and if the gauge goes to the bottom, replace the sender. if not, the open circuit is between the wire end and the gauge, possibly in the 14 pin connector in the engine room.

I had this recently when I put FG bumpers on. Turns out I had knocked the plug loose where the harness comes through the body into the engine compartment (right behind the oil tank). Once I plugged it in all was good. Sounds like yours might be a bad sender?

Pegging the gauge when ignition switch is on can be caused either by a break in the wire [or loose/bad connection] to the gauge or by a loose or bad connection at the White ground wire at the sender!!!

The only connector involved is the 6-pin one for the right tail lamp assembly ...

Yes, a bad sender can cause it, too, but bad connection is more likely!

I agree that you should check all your connections, but I had the same problem on mine and it was indeed the sending unit in the oil tank. Clean the area around the tank well if you do replace it, it is a dirty job.

Brian, I recently had the same problem....bad sender...trouble shot, but don't have the part yet.. Did you pull the oil tank to replace it?

Absolutely no need to remove the oil tank to replace the level sender. Be sure to clean the area well as well the connections being careful not to get junk in the tank when you begin trying to wiggle the sender out. Have patience taking the sender out and putting the new one in, and don't forget the new cork gasket.

Thanks everyone!! Great advice!! (Also looked up 101 Projects)
Got home late last night from work and fell asleep on the floor in the kids bedroom after reading some bedtime stories. Woke up at 3AM wondering where I was! I'll tinker with this over the weekend. Thanks everyone!!
