No turning back! (removing paint)

Project is indeed on the way, these are day old pictures so there has been more paint removal..Gotta get myself a real digital camera and not some crappy mobile phone "camera".

I got the flares detached in one piece...the problem is how to get them back on And rear windows still has to go, seals and window in one piece

Looks scarey to me!!! But I give you credit. I haven't started learning how to do this stuff yet. Keep us posted. How much are you planning on doing to the car?

Basically I will do all the stripping, welding etc. Will also shoot the base paint myself...

Paint will be a metallic , dunno which colour yet The cost will be the cost of paint and other supplies, so not much. Lucky me the Porsche (targa especially) has surface area way less than "normal" car.

Will keep posting pictures

PS: I think the "best" places on that car had 5-6 layers of paint and bondo.

What did you use to cut the old flares off? I'm planning my own surgery

Keep up the good work...when I did mine there was a huge piece of bondo on the right rear quarter just behind the door.
When I removed it...the door stuck out a little...so I just adjusted the door stop.
It looks straight now...so I assume the PO had applied the bondo to fix the door problem!
I had about 3 layers of paint...but the big problem was the tiny pits of rust in the bottom layer of primer.
It appeared that the car had been left out in the rain when first primed...then they shot more primer over that to cover the rust!!
It was lucky that I decides to strip completely....or I would have lost the car.

I used a heatgun to remove all the bondo around the flares, the fiberglass does not mind the heat, unless you heat the flare excessively.

The flare had been sandwiched over the metal part, so i had to cut the resin with this electric saw from inside the fenderwell. Then i just inserted (with help of hammer) thin blade between the flare and fender. POP! it came off.

I tried stripping with all kinds of paint removers, forget those. Heatgun + spatula is the way to go. If there are fiberglass flares underneath, the paint remover usually destroys those too.

Your progress looks great. Is it the photograph or is the sheet metal of the rear fender that "cobbley"? Are you going to replace with metal flares or back to fiberglass? If you do metal ones, I'm sure you already know to butt weld them on. I have seen too many repaired areas which people have lapped joined the metal and had rust develop in those areas. Keep going and keep up the photographic documentation if you can borrow a camera.

looking good! you'll know the condition of the car after your strip. i put a thin layer of wax on the area i stripped, asap, to prevent rusting...which doesn't hurt cuz you'll need to block to metal later and then you can prime after you metal block. it sure minimizes the pit rusting
