First Oil Change!

Completed my first oil change on the 911 tonight. I have tackled other projects much more complex than this however after reading all of the whoas of fellow pelicanites, I thought I would share my story.

I think I would grade my performance a B or so. I used a big old 5 gallon bucket to catch all of the oil, and boy does it come out fast!!!! For a second I thought it was going to fill that sucker! The oil is sooo hot, I wore gloves, that saved me some burns for sure. everything went pretty smooth, some splashing upon intial launch...The worst spillage occured when I took off the oil filter, it was so tight in that area that I ended up spilling the contents down into the engine bay that ran down underneath onto the control arm and left a nice puddle in the garage. I emptied the bucket into one of those big wide oil containers which I will take to the auto parts store for disposal.

Ok, so all is well, I even went under the car and cleaned everything up and even detailed the bottom end a bit.

My big screwup was this...I put everything back together..added my oil, cleaned up the garage and went to go for a spin. Started her up, let out the clutch and nothing....the car wouldn't budge? I thought maybe accidently I screwed up the clutch cable or something, let her have some gas..and again nothing...almost like the car was being held to the ground by superglue!! What the F? Got out looked around...I left the F'ing Wheel chocks on the front tires!!!! What an idiot!!!! I probably took years off the life of the clutch!

Pulled them out and the car ran incredibly!!! I had to add about 1 1/2 quarts after my ride to bring it to the half way mark on the dip stick. If it wasn't for the chock issue I would have given myself a B+, oh well, hopefully I didn't do any damage during that scenario. But wow what a sense of satisfaction when the job was done!

Nice job, except for the chocks. It's a great feeling to know you've mastered something on a 911. I'm currently restoring an 83 SC coupe....I understand how you felt when you got something successfully accomplished.

While on the topic of oil change, I pulled my sump plate the other day. When I filled it back up with oil, it took 5 qts. Doesn't seem like much of a dry sump. May small water cooled cars run on less than that.
Where does it all come from?

5 quarts is about right for the amount of oil which the engine holds. My first oil change involved the sump plate/screen and there were 3 layers of gaskets on that sucker. Took me an hour to scrape them off. No wonder it leaked around there a bit
