How do I add rear seatbelts to my 72
Hi so my wife loves the car and all except for the fact that there are no seatbelts in the back. My kids are young and they do fit there, just not safe. I would appreciate any advice on how to retrofit seatbelts into the back.
Thanks Mike |
Mike,
My '74 didn't have belts when I bought it, but there were plastic "bolts and nuts" attached to the rear where you would need to install the seat belt hardware. I bought a set of "like new" rear belts on eBay and installed them without any problems. Can you see the plastic things I'm talking about in your carpet on each side of the rear seats? |
Mike:
Does your car have plastic inserts on either side of each seat??? If so all you have to do is buy the belts used (make sure they have the bolts on the end). My PET program seems to say that the fixed nuts should be there. |
? My '72 has rear seat belts...no shoulder belts, just lap belts...could an owner somewhere up the line have removed them???

You will definately have the connection points for rear lap belts but it will take some carpet and side panel removal to find them. In my '70 I installed three point retractables in the rear which meant drilling two 1/2" holes in my rear deck as there was no factory provision for a shoulder strap.
I bought the belts from Professionally Engineered Products. They have everything you would need and they use the same manufacturers for their components as Porsche. http://www.peparts.com/pepbelts.html Hope this helps.
