Hesitation and stalling
My SC hasn't been running well since my mechanic replaced the fuel pump. It wouldn't start because my pump died but since then it's been hesitating and feels like it's gonna stall when I remove the oil filler cover. How should I go about troubleshooting this? Can it be fouled plugs, cap or rotor? Or can it be a vacuum leak or all of the above? These are probably very basic questions but I'm an every other weekend mechanic. Thanks.

I have a 79sc and if I'm understanding your question correctly it's actually normal for the idle speed to drop when you remove the oil filler cap.
You should be idling at about 1000 rpm to begin with so when you remove the cap the engine should sound like it's not running as fast and smoothly but it shouln't stall or stumble. Make sure your idle speed is high enough so when you check the oil the engine continues to run. If your engine runs well the rest of the time, you don't have a problem. |

My idle is set at 950 and when I remove the cap it drops down and feels like it's going to stall. On normal driving, there is hesitation. It could be that my car just needs a tune-up but this problem began after my mechanic replaced the fuel pump. That's why I'm wondering if a vacuum leak can produce the same symptoms. BTW, if you haven't joined the BAR group on a drive, you might want to look into it. Nice roads, low traffic and good company.

I’m sorry, I think I misunderstood you question the first time.
Take the car back to the mechanic and explain the hesitation problem began after he replaced the fuel pump. Don’t blame him for it, just ask him what he thinks it could be. If you have a decent relationship with him he’ll want to fix it for you by double checking his work, making sure the new fuel pump is working properly, looking for a vacuum leak and maybe a few quick adjustments to the fuel mixture. If it ran fine before he’ll want you to have a good experience so you come back. At least this is what I’m use to with my mechanic at S.CAR. GO. Rob King will fiddle around with my plain Jane sc until we both think it’s running right. It’s not that he’s making a ton of money off me, it’s that he wants to stand behind his work. I don’t mean to sound strident but If a mechanic won’t do this for you, you shouldn’t stay with him. Hey, can you tell me more about the BAR Group, it sounds like fun. I’d love to get together with some guys who have the same car and car problems I do. Let me know what happens with your car, I’m interested. |

Thanks for the good advice. I've decided to go back to him after I replace my plugs, etc. I'll ask him to set the timing also. Go to this site for the BAR (Bay Area Rennlisters) group...
