What to do? Longish

Just got back from visiting mom in Fl.

Come home to her house on the last night of my visit and
her next door neighbor has a 92 C4 sitting in the driveway.

So I go over to say hello and check out the car.

He came about the car through a business transaction tied to a divorce.

He only needs his investment back and is willing to sell me the car for 16k, he is not interested in holding on to it.

As we were having a cocktail and BS'ng my wife wanders over and says nice car.

When she realizes it's a C4, we live in NY and get a fair amount of snow, and has dual airbags she asks if it's for sale.

When she heard the price she looks at me and says "if you can get close to 16 for your car you should buy this".

Cosmetically the car is pretty good. I know it has had some paintwork up front that looks to have been cosmetic, could not find anything that looked like structural fixes.

The rockers don't sit right and there is a small ding on the passenger side above the rocker.

109k on the clock. Car drives really nice, pulls well and drives straight.

He has 12k in receipts for work done by the PO who is the 2nd owner.

I am having my brother run it over to his friends who owns a Porsche tuning shop for a PPI. He did the PPI on my 84 and was dead on.

What do you guys think?

Wait for the PPI results and ask what the heck happened to the rockers. I know it's all wheel drive, but that doesn't meen you're supposed to off road it! Looks like it was high centered.

But cosmetics can be fixed in your garage with some paitence, so it's no big. Nice looking car!

You've had time to sleep on it. Do what your gut and brain tell you. Ignore the heart. If PPI is good, it seems like a good deal.
Good luck!!

..if the PPI comes up good, hell for $16K, why not ?!

I thought 91 or was it 92 was the 1st year for the aero mirrors ? this one still has the old square style.

For $16K . Doesnt a wreck or a theft recovery sell for close to that?

Check the title and make sure the PPI looks good, then jump on it! That's cheaper then the '87 I just bought. The least expensive 964 I looked at was $20500 and it had 98K miles on a '91 coupe w/Tip.

Ohh, and if you do get it, the first thing you should do (IMHO) is lose those hub-caps!

I've never liked those wheels on that car. Both are too flat and plain for each other. I like the car and the wheels, just not together.

The aero mirrors started in 92, so this is likely not a 92 - maybe a 91?

I wouldn't worry about the rockers too much if you don't see any damage, or if the PPI doesn't turn up anything, if you take them off once on a 964 it's almost impossible to get them back on and looking correct, they might have just been removed at some point to get at an oil line or something. Most 964 rockers end up looking like that

I have always been curious as to how good the C-4 does in the snow and Winter driving. I know it's better than a C-2 or a rear wheel drive only, bu how would one do with just standard 70 series mud & snows on 15" wheels?

Oh, and about the car, if you like it and it checks out, go for it! You only live once.

Make sure there is no structural damage to the car. Big gaps in any body panels edge make me cringe. Point out to the PPI wrench that they look specifically for accident damage and make sure that front and back of this vehicle are from the same car.

Also, for what it's worth check carfax.

This is somewhat the ugly duckling years and the 4wd isn't too popular with most folks. The early 3.6 engines weren't the big hit either, IIRC. But what really helps is that you like the car, you wife likes it, it is a strong runner and it is indeed very well priced.

I'd try to knock a grand or two off if the PPI shows any minor work that's needed. Also, don't forget, any body work that involves paint will cost you a pretty penny and is hard o do all by yourself properly.

Checked the VIN code and the car is in fact a 90 not a 92.

Hoping to have the PPI done by the weekend.

Little concerned that it is 2 years older as the 90's had the three major issues, distributor belt, leaky heads and flywheel problem.

I'm hoping that since the car has 109 on the clock that the corrections have already been made. One would think?

The distributor belt fix is easy to spot but the other 2 may be difficult/impossible to determine and certainly not cheap to fix.

And those wheels, that'd be the first thing to do if the car checks out mechanically.

Gotta admit though, after 8 full days of not driving the 84 the last couple of days have been a real pleasure.

There's just something about the older cars that's gets me going.

Don't rely on carfax to tell the story. It could have been wrecked 20 times and unless it was totaled, may not get reported to carfax. Best of luck on the deal.

Well,

Even though Carfax came back clean the car, as I initially knew, had bodywork done down one side.

Airbag computer needs to be replaced which means one or both deployed at some time, also an undetermined ABS issue.

Leaks some, not unusual but car may not have had the leaky head issue fixed. $$$

Needs a clutch, $$$, on a C4 it's 14+ hours in labor. At 109K could it be the original clutch? If so I doubt the flywheel issue has been fixed. Major $$$$

CEL has been disabled. hmmm,

Overall my guy in FL likes the 84 that I bought last year better than this one.
I respect his opinion, it's the same shop that is contributing to Juan Ruiz's car.

After getting the report my shop in NY was less than enthused about the C4.

Think the clutch is the killer, could be $5k to sort it out. There are a lot of cars out there for $21k that I could just get in and drive.

So I'm passing.

Good decision. PPIs are invaluable aren't they?
