Removal: Engine Cover Sheet Metal
Is there a good picture or schematic of the metal engine cover? It looks like about 4-6 pieces that surround the engine half way up. Mine needs a cleaning and painting, but I'm not really sure if I can get it all off with the engine on a dolly.

Do you know if I can take 1-7 off without messing with all the little pieces?

I just did this on the engine I put in my car. The side pieces and the front piece (fan side) are easily removed. The rear pieces (trans side) had hoses going thru and looked to be a pain. I only painted the side pieces and the front pieces. I just cleaned up the rear since it's not worth the hassle to remove in my opinion.

I was able to get all mine off with the engine sitting on a few 4x4's. They are held on by a hand full of 10 mm bolts, nothing fancy.

John, The tin between the cylinders (#14) cannot be removed without removing the oil return tubes. Removing these tubes either requires crushing them and using the expandable kind, or removing the heads requiring a top-end teardown.
Unless they are rusty and disintegrating (potentially causing cylinder hotspots because of air-flow issues) best to leave them alone untill you have to do a top-end job.

Don,
We're on the same wavelength. If I can easily get the front and sides off I'd be happy. Nineteen years of crud has left it a little less than desirable. John

I suggest Krylon BBQ paint on these pieces. It covers great and is claimed to be good for some rediculus temperature. Over 1000 degrees I think.

I powder coated all the tin on my engine two years ago and it still looks like new.
