Best DIY Engine Bay Paint

I'm part way thru with my engine rebuild and I've decided that I should paint the engine bay while it is out and since I no longer have the sound pad.

Can anyone recommend the best DIY product for the engine bay area? The car is black and I'll be keeping the same color in the bay if that makes any difference.

A few before images:

I have not done it yet, but I plan to paint mine on my SC with POr-15 black. It is easy to apply with a brush, looks great, and is realativley inexpenseive.

The bad is it doesn't come off your hands for a week or so.

Just wear some disposable gloves for the POR paints. Latex or rubber are better than nitriles.

Better yet, POR-15 gray, and paint on a good black paint over it, to protect it. POR doesn't like sunlight, and if you use gray POR and black paint, you can see where you missed.

I plan to use POR gray, and topcoat with POR chassis black. This will result in a semi-gloss finish that might be a little more forgiving of imperfections than gloss while still remaining cleanable. I have an early car, however, so the semi-gloss black is quite close to the original factory finish of my car.

I'm doing a 68' right now and using ZeroRust for the undercoat followed by Eastwood chassis black. Looks factory to me. Smestas: Not to openly critizie but can you do us all a favor and at least show us that you "really" love your car and ditch the Fram oil filter. Infact if you have any laying around take them to the closest garbage can and drop them all there and "remind" yourself never to buy them again. The OE filter is not that expensive.

A little off topic, but if that's a Fram oil filter I would quit using them. Have you ever seen a cutaway of these?

I used a power washer and a good degreaser to clean the engine compartment. I bought a quart of 'Rosewood' paint from the local paint supplier and used a brush to apply. I found that the sheet metal has texture and using a 'dab-dab' motion with the brush rather than a 'stroke' provides a more consistent/even finish. Really fills the crevices of the textured surface better.

Just repainted my Fathers 80' SC engine compartment in the original color (light blue metallic). We had the engine out for valve adjustment and some other things so I just took advantage of the time to take care of this. Replaced all the engine stickers while I was at it.

I too painted my engine bay with POR products. Two coats of POR Silver followed by one coat of POR Sterling Silver top coat.

Engine compartment looks great.
Kemo - wix are great and easy to get. NAPA, carquest, bumper to bumper etc. They have more pleats, metal end caps and actual by pass coil spring. Fram has less pleats, cardboard end caps and a cheap wafer like by pass spring.
Not trying to hyjack your post charlie = sorry

Black makes it really dark in there. I am going from black to body color (in a '73).

A Pro painter will do it for about $200-300 -- well worth the minimal cost.

actually the early cars didn't use body color -- it started sometime in the '70s -- but I like the body color best.

How did you remove the paint in the engine bay? Strip? heat gun? scrap?

Isnt there some kind of undercoat in there too. How did you get that off.

Yours really looks good. I like the gloss.

remove paint !

Hello
first i used i heat gun with scaper and it is not easy in all corner !!!
i had before one coat of primer and blue paint on it white undercoat and for finish other black undercoat. With the paint striper you can't remove all in one aplication,
when i finished with the heat gun i used the paint striper for clean it ,
i find no rust... and i protect it with new primer epoxy !
and new paint and clear
i do it for my chassis at all

Wow, that is georgeous. Very nice job. Wish I could do something like that.

After stripping to bar metal, did you use any metal prep solution before shooting with primer?
