Out running the Law
Quick story out of South Florida.
A friend of mine in Ft Lauderdale, Florida works for FAU does research in the Everglades. A few weeks ago while driving off to work at 5 a.m. he heard on his radio that the FL state police clocked a person doing 131 mph on Alligator Alley and had given pursuit. The car then accelerated to 181mph at which point the police lost the car. The only thing the trooper could confirm was that the car was a Porsche... Question: Can a stock turbo 911 do 181mph? Could any other stock Porsche 911 (or other) do 181 mph? By the way, 181mph was the last speed the police clocked him at before they lost him. Maybe he was still accelerating?! |
My guess was that it wasn't stock. Maybe it was one of those RGruppe guys with their lightweight, big Hp frankensteins with a modified gearbox....
I can't think of a stock 911/ 930 that could do those speeds. The gearbox seems to be the limiter. Even if the HP was there, the stock tranny wouldn't allow it. Maybe the newer cars are different. |
A pretty much stock 928 GT or GTS can do 180 pretty easily. If an S4 has some mods it could probably do it as well. 951s would run out of gear around 165. I thought the later 930 could do in the 170s stock. My guess is it was something with a ton of money in it.

It was a stock 911SC with a K&N filter.
|
Did it have an eRam bumper sticker?
BTW: the new GT3 will do 190MPH. |

Yep! The new (stock) Turbo does 190. I work for a Porsche tuner. We build cars capable of 200+ mph. I know for a fact that one of our cars was accurately timed at 206 on a US Highway--- but you didn't hear that from me! ;) Jeff |
On Alligator Alley huh? A Lot of exits there to choose from! I am sure they just brought out the helicopter and set up a road block in Naples - end of the chase.
|
Even the helis can't do 180mph I think.
In the UK there is one of those wildest police chases clip with a guy in a white 993 who evades not only motorway patrol cars (250bhp Volvo T5s) but also the heli for a long time. They only found him again as he left his car out in the open and was standing by it making a call on his mobile phone! |
Hey at least he stopped and got out of the car before answering his cell phone!

Was that Jaun out cruisen his TURBO :)

Juan? You out there? Sound familiar?

It would be impossible to evade the police on Alligator alley. Its a 90 mile road with 2 exits about 35 miles apart. They would set up a road block and there would be no escaping. Sounds like B.S. to me.
|
If he hit a bump at that speed, then he sleeps with the alligators.

Shhh, does good for the Porsche Mistique. Was it a 924? |
Police helicopters can only do a little over 100+ MPH. However, they simply fly higher allowing them to see further. Also, police don't use roadblocks like in the movies because they have been proven ineffective. They radio ahead to their buddies in the neighboring cities. We may be able to outrun one, but we could not outrun 20 from all different areas!

Spike strips....ever run flat doing over a 100mph....ain't fun.

Can you say "nitrous" ?
I saw a pcar that had a nitrous setup some years ago....always wondered what became of the car. Seems like it went to Florida....Hmmmm. Bob |
