Semi-Synthetic Oil

Is this stuff legit? Technically you could use a bottle of Dino and put one drop of syn and it would be semi-synthetic. Does anyone know more about this stuff. The Castrol semi-synthetic interests me and it is only $2.79. I know it's not Mobil 1 but is it actually any "better" than plain dino or just thinner?? Any schools of thought on this?

Not sure, but when I switched my Accord over to Synthetic (It already had about 105K) I first used the Castrol Semi-synthetic for two oil changes. Figured I'd break in my seals to synthetic slowly. Not sure if was any better than switching over directly, but figured it couldn't hurt. Plus, if it leaked, I would have saved money.

BTW, I run Castrol's full synthetic in the Accord and have 197K on it now. No problems. It all works out to be about the same since they say 5-6K miles for an oilchange on synthetic.

But, of course do a search on synthetic and you will find TONS of info. Most people find their P-cars leak when introduced to the stuff.

Back when I worked in the Auto parts industry I was told that the Valvoline and Castrol "blend" oils were mixed 50/50, but that's been several years, so I can't say for sure. You could always buy some of each and just fill that way for the same effect.

On a somewhat related note, has anyone seen the "Prestone Quick-Fill" antifreeze? Man what a rip off. You can buy a gallon of antifreeze for $7.69, or you can buy a gallon container with half a gallon of antifreeze and half a gallon of water for $7.49.

Does anyone else think this is hilarious? The sad thing, people will pay it!
