alt belt/pulley cap?

putting on a new belt, and i'm running: 3 shims on the inside, then the pulley half, 3 more shims and then the nut. on an 88 is there supposed to be a cap between the last shim (6th) on the outside of the pulley half and the nut? the outside shims will not be held in place if centered on the shaft when the not is tightened, so am wondering if i'm missing something.

Thanks
Charles

hi,

i think there's nothing missing....
it's the same procedure on my '82 3.0.
there is a cap (29), but this doesn't center the shims anyway.
you have to center the shims behind that cap by hand while pre-tightening the nut, and watch them when fixing it...
once having fixed the nut, the shims stay in place.

greets

Yep, there should be 6 shims, the pulley half, a bowl shaped "washer" (number 29 in the above diagram), a lock washer (I think) and the nut.

You are definitely missing the cup shaped washer.

I found the cap..number 29... it fell down to the very bottom of the pan i finally found it and fished it out with a coat hanger after removing the a/c compressor. so much for a 30 minute job.
