901 Trans. Q's '71S

Hi, I have a basically stock 2.2S engine. 901 transmission ready for rebuild, should I put in 904 mainshaft and/or aluminum intermediate plate? 904 mainshaft=$795at Otto's
Intermediate plate is about $475...

Will these help my trans. last a lot longer?

Some autoX, DE planned, but mostly street.

It is my understanding that the advantage of the 904 shaft is to allow for a change in the second gear ratio. The standard 901 shaft has the gear as an intregal part and is not changeable. I changed the top 3 gears in my trans and left 1st and 2nd alone. The intemediate plate made from billet aluminum will make the trans stronger. If you take care of your trans and shift it correctly, it should be fine the way it is. You will do more damage to your motor than your trans in most cases if you are not accurate in your shifting.

The 901 will not power shift. You will miss the gear and possibly hurt the motor. Having the trans in top shape is important, but not any more important than having your shift linkage in perfect condition as well as having your clutch properly adjusted.

With all three working in concert, you should be able to do the DE's and drive the street as you like. Only after getting all this in order would I be going for the plate or the shaft. For a race car, it might make more sense.

Sorry, but what is a "power shift"? Thanks!
