vin - engine number

hi folks,

small question , i've heard about cars with matching VIN and engine numbers, but how can you tell if they are matching?

do they have matching digits or something?

9113310111 is my VIN

but the number on engine says
901 106 101 5R

doesn't seem to match at all, does this mean my car doesn't have it's original engine?

greetz,
Stijn

You are reading the wrong engine number. The 901 number is the part number of the case. The engine number is on a flat vertical surface on the right hand side of the fan housing close to the oil sending unit. Once you have that number you check to see if the VIN and the engine number are from the same years. You need a book that lists both like Wayne's rebuilding book or the Porsche Red book.

You will need to order the original Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche. This is often called the Kardex (cardex???). Do a search and you will find a lot of threads on this subject.

To clarify - it's not that your chassis and engine numbers match each other it's that they match the kardex.

svandamme, I just noticed that you have your car listed as a 1972, yet you have posted a VIN that indicates a 1973 model. You might want to start your search there. Mike

Stjin,

The engine number will read 633XXXX. The 6 is for 6 cylinder engine, the 3 is the 'S' model type, the next 3 is for '73 model year, and XXXX is the serial number of the engine. Looking at the Early S registry list I have, the car with VIN 9113310109 (which is two numbers away from yours) has engine # 66330275. Assuming this car is numbers matching, the number on your engine should be somewhat close to this. Understand the engines weren't put in cars exactly in order and there were S coupes and targas made at the same time with the same engines.

Mark is right the only way to know for sure if you have a matching #s car is to obtain a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche Club.

Looks like it was number 101 one out of 925 made. Your engine # should fall in the range between 6339001-6339136 and it has a 4spd Sportomatic. This sound right to you?

Glad to help. Yes, 0109 is here in the States. It is located in Ohio. The next closest is 0115 which is in California.

Your car was built in '72 but that does not mean its a '72. Your car is a '73. That's been going on for decades. Build a vehicle in the later part of a year (72) and call it the next year (73). Someone else can elaborate on why.

Your engine (633XXXX) number is located on the right vertical surface of the fan shroud. The numbers are smaller than the part # your listed above. Probably half as big and covered in grime. I think the engine type is going to be 911/53 or 911/63. This # is located on a horizontal surface just ahead of the engine number. Also covered in grime and harder to see.
