im a new porsche owner (still havnt driven the car) but im just amazed. was reading in some porsche engine book that the block/case is held together without a gasket (wow). i have played with chevrolets in the past and they usually have more cork and permatex than metal (and still leak) can the DIY reassemble the case with such precision or is there a gasket which needs/can be used. any other mechanical details that are just amazing?

The two crankcase halves are not gasketed. They have a metal to metal fit with a special sealant. The factory (and Wayne) suggest using loctite 573 or 574. The only real difference between the two is cure time.
Others have reported good success using yamabond, a product used to seal crankcase halves on yamaha two cycle engines. I've used yamabond on waverunner engines, good stuff. If you are at all curious about these engines I would suggest buying the book "how to rebuild and modify Porsche 911 engines" written by our host and available from pelican Parts. Well worth the money even if you never rebuild one of these engines. edit for typos |
