Weighed my 930 yesterday

My 1979 930 weights 2908 lbs with a half tank of gas. It has fiberglass C2 bumpers with all the original bumper stuff removed. It has the AC system and some really heavy 17" turbo twist wheels.

It sure is nice of Porsche to make the 911 so easy to corner balance. I was also supprised by how muck preload was in my sway bars.

My friend's brother also came by and weighed his stock 1976 930. It was 2800 lbs.

NICE, Dave. How is it running?

Also, does anyone have an idea of what a stock 930 of similar vintage weighs? And what about a boxster just for comparrison?

I think it's around 280-285 for the 3.3L US cars?

That seems awful heavy. What is the listed weights from the factory? My 78 SC is listed at 27xx pounds, but I don't know the actual weight.

I think my 930 was 2950 stock. I hear that the 80s cars are over 3000. Now I have glass bumpers, lightweight seats, etc, I can't wait to have it reweighed. Although, the 3.6 liter might add some pounds . I still need to remove my rear seats.

What I really want to know is why the 76 weighs less stock. I know that they do weigh less, but I want to know why so I can attack what is adding weight to my 79. I realize some of it is engine and intercooler, but is there anything else?

Add to that number turbo plumbing, intercooler, a wing, flares, bigger wheels, tires, brakes, and (unfortunately) more standard equipment.

125shifter,

My 1982 930 weighed 2680 lbs with half a tank of gas at my last corner balance.

It's a plastic 964 3.8 RSR clone. No air, Sparco EVO's, gutted interior with RS carpet / door panels, 55lb Roll Bar and Fikse FM5's.

More details here

Layall, does your number include the driver?

My 87 930 with EVO seats, RS America interior, full cage, no A/C & Kinesis K20 weighs 3190lbs with driver & half tank of gas. Now I would really be interested in how I could strip another 300lbs so that its "competitve" with the norm

Here are my 1983 930's corner balance #'s:

3168 total weight with full tank of gas and driver (me, 180 lbs)

Front Wheel Weight - 1202 / 37.8%
Rear Wheel Weight - 1967 / 62.2 %

Left Side Weight - 1647 / 52%
Right Side Weight - 1521 / 48%

LF - 649 / 20.4%
RF - 553 / 17.4%
LR - 998 / 31.4%
RR - 969 / 30.5%

RF-LR Cross Weight 1551 / 48.95%
LF - RR Cross Weight 1618 / 51.05%

The car contains a DAS roll bar and Kirkey aluminum racing seats.
Other than that, it is pretty much stock (Except wheels/tires).

I haven't attempted to adjust anything yet. I'm going to wait until I can install stiffer torsion bars and sway bars.

Mine dynoed at 282 at the rear wheels (euro 1983)

PatrickT,

The car is 2680 lbs. at half tank without me.

My corner weights were done with 160 lbs. in the fun seat.

I've even pulled the a/c parts out of the smugglers box.

I'm sure your full cage at lack of plastic parts is where the extra weight comes from.

From the Porsche 911 Red Book

1974-77 Turbo 2,630 lbs
1978-83 Turbo 2,870 lbs

So I was a little disappointed by the 2,900 lbs since I have the fiberglass bumpers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the intercooler and related hardware adds 100lbs. My B&B intercooler probably weighs close to 30lbs.

I'm working on some 3 peice wheels using Fuchs for the center so that should shave about 40lbs. I'm one 16x6 Fuch short if anyone has one.

Texas Turbo, the cars running pretty good. I've got it handling a lot better than when I bought it. I think I've got some broken head studs so I'll be pulling the engine soon. What's up in Austin? I'll also putting in a new clutch and a rollbar so I'll be ready for some DE's next year. (I'd send this as a PM but I suspect you don't have the automatic PM notice turned on)

Those impact bumpers weigh a ton too, go to fiberglass C2 Turbo bumpers and it'll shave a fat chunk of weight off.

If those twists have the built in spacers for offset correction then they are going to be heavy as hell. Try weighting it again with some fuches, i bet you'll be surprised.

Oh and patrick, cages add a lot of weight, my roll bar makes up less then half of a full cage, and it weighs about 50-60 lbs.

I weighed the twists with tires on them and if I remember correctly they were 55 lbs each. Since my S03's weigh about 27lbs, thats a 28 lb wheel. I figure 3 piece wheels will be under 20 lbs. I think it will also make a noticable difference on first gear accelleration.

78+ 930's have engine moved further back (redesigned rear engine-mount), much longer clutch bellhousing, heavier clutch disc and pressure-plate, extra intercooler, reworked rear body (so intercooler can fit) and probably more equipment...

now i feel better - she's not abnormally overweight Without driver, mine is virtually dead idential to BrianKeithSmith's.

I also have a front oil cooler with fibre glass spoiler so that must have added a few more pounds. And in fact, going from my 16" 2 piece BBS to 17" 3 piece Kinesis cost about 10-15lb at each corner (albeit with different tires - Kuhmos instead of Toyo).

This rest of the AC system (hosts, front condenser, ...) is coming out this winter, so hope that will save another few pounds.

Hey guys,
Interesting post about the weight of the 930. I've got an 82' 930. What is the real advantage of saving, say 200-300 #. When I used to drag race off road vehichles, it was said that 7#= 1 hp. I don't think I would take out my AC for performance reasons. What is the real advantage in performance? Thanks, Steve
