How thick is the Porsche frame where the shifter goes?

I have a 915 tranny out of a '72 911 and was wondering about how thick is the frame or body where the shifter (part 1 in pic 1) attaches to the bracket (part 6 in pic 2)

The reason, as some of you already know is, I'm putting a 915 into my '81 DeLorean and am having a HUGE problem getting the shift linkage correct. I need to know the space so that I can make sure that I have the right distance between those parts so I don't put the shifter rod into a bind. Thanks for any help

Part 6 in the 2nd drawing bolts directly to the shifter housing (Part 1 in the 1st drawing). It does not attach to the frame. There are no guides in the tunnel to support the linkage other than that.

Do you have to move the flux capacitor to make room for the 915?

Well, somebody had to ask! Sorry!

Dave,

Thanks for the reply, but are you saying that the 3 bolts that go through part #6 are just attach straight up to the shifter? You don't sit the shifter onto the frame and then bolt part #6 to it from under the frame? If that's the case, what keeps the shifter from falling through the frame?

Thanks for the reply!

Part #6 gets sandwiched between the shift tower and the center tunnel.

Brain fart. Sorry about that. Just went through this two weeks ago, not sure what I was thinking.

I'd like to get you a measurement off my '72 of where #6 is relative to #1...you need to know how far below? But I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it for you. Let me poke around my other (disassembled) '72 this weekend and see what I can do.

What I'm needing to know how thick the frame or body is that the shifter sits on. So, without the shifter in, how thick is the frame it sits on. Say, its 1/8 inch thick, then I'd know to make a plate that's 1/8 inch thick to put between the shifter (#1) and the bracket (#6) to make up for the Porsche frame not being there.

Thanks again!

i think the tunnel is just 16 or 18ga sheet metal welded onto the 16 -18ga floor pan

As others have said, the bracket sits on top of the tunnel against the shifter. The rear bolt goes through the bracket and secures the shifter to the tunnel.

Here is what it looks like after removing the shifter:

James,

Thanks alot for the pic! That REALLY helps me out alot! I thought that the bracket would mount under the frame somehow. Luck being though, I have the EXACT same setup going on the DeLorean so I'm in good shape! Thanks again James and to everyone else that replied! I REALLY appreciate it!

Double brain fart? I was pretty sure that was how it was supposed to go and how I did it a couple weeks ago. But I figured Tyson had done it 100x more than me and knew best. Go figure. Glad you got the information you need after a few false starts. Good luck with the DeLorean project.

DeLorschean? What's next, a 930 powertrain in a 69 Nova? Hahaaa.
Seriously, sounds like a super project, post a good pic if there's time.

The engine/tranny should be able to be placed first. Then with the trans in neutral a ballpark cutout can be made in the shift tunnel and a centering plate can be welded in whereever to locate the front linkage if it doesn't have to be cut/shortened to fit.
Got a good aluminum welder?

Welp, I put a Chevy 4.3 Vortec out of a '94 S-10 into it about 3 years ago and its been running GREAT with the new engine! The stock engine was COMPLETE junk and every other week there was something wrong with it. That's why I did the engine swap. It was the smartest thing I ever did with that car! Well, the auto tranny started acting up b/c , I guess, of the power of the 4.3 so I figured I'd look into a tranny swap (and I wanted to go with a manual setup) I found out alot of people with custom cars and kit cars would use Chevy's bolted up to a Porsche transaxle. It was the perfect match! I've heard VERY good things about the Porsche trannies and I'm hoping that they're as good as everyone has said. The one I got was out of a '72 911. Its already mounted into the car and I've got to get the linkage squared away to finish it up. I've also have to come up with a way to convert it to a hydraulic setup instead of a manual one which I don't think will be too difficult. (I've already got the pedals in and the DMC master/slave will hopefully be installed tomorrow) My plans are to take the fork at the bottom of the tranny and put it on backwards so that it is on the passenger side which will make it a 'push' style setup instead of the stock 'pull' type setup.

Thanks alot guys!
