I just picked up my...30th? car....mostly Lemans runners from the various eras...

it's the mario/michael andretti, philippe alliot (sp?), 1983 LeMans 3rd place car.

lots more 956's to come...the CANON livery was released last week.

Count me as one!

Here are 2 pics of my current collections. The first one is of the 1/32 variety which I just got into over the last few years:

OK, and here's a gratuitous shot I just couldn't resist ... it's a tribute to LeMans

awesome...

I run 4 lanes...37 feet or so...its tons of fun...even my wife's friends are curious about it...

other folks are just like "Where's the kids tonight?"

My wife replies..."We dont' have kids"

I cannot accurately depict in words the expression that follows.

Then maybe you guys might know this.
I had a Strombecker set when I was a kid. I happened onto a complete set at a garage sale. Layed down a big old five spot. I guess they don't hold their value like old Porsches.
The cars run well but the tires are very hard. I went to the local model/hobby shop but they didn't have any tires that would fit.
Who can I call.
While I was there I saw some really neat 1/32 scale cars, like the ones you guys show on this page. I would like to buy a Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512 but the guy there said the newer cars draw more current and might burn out the controller.

I figure an early "Battle of the Titans" would be neat at one of the next tech sessions.

Fly was one of the manufacturers that they had in the case. Great detail.

My son (4) and I have been playing with an AFX set almost every night recently. He loves it. I have been wondering about getting a 1/32 set-up. Do any of you guys who run these get bored of them? I just wonder if it would end up under the bed after a couple of weeks, never to be seen again.

I already have one 1/32 scale slot car and it would be very easy for me to start collecting the cars. I have over 100 1/43rd scale cars and they don't do anything! The 1/32's do.

What track set-up would you suggest?

Doug - Nice collection!!

The accuracy of these new slots cars is really incredible. They're almost too nice to take out of the case.

You need to replace the original controllers with a parma or other after-market hd ones, because the new cars and controllers draw more current. A good set up is to ditch the transformer, and replace with a 12 car battery run in series with a 6-volt motorcycle battery. ( 12v + to 6v - connect 6v + and 12v - to track terminals)use a trickle charger to keep them charged up. Now this information comes from someone who was into it when I was a kid back in the 60's and then again twenty years ago, I'm sure things have changed because I see new 1/32 tracks up at the hobby store, but if you have old track like strombecker or revell which I still have up in the rafters it is a cheap way of getting back into it, I still have a lot of cars and parts like the ones pictured. I remember it being a lot of fun but found myself spending more time working on the cars than actually driving them. Sound familiar.

I remember tinkering with the small scale stuff when I was a young'in, but have not honestly even thought of it much until very recently.

Now I have a 2 1/2 year old son whom I am -- of course -- encouraging to develop a healthy addiction to cars and Porsches in particular. (It is clearly working, so far).

On a whim, I ordered "him" a Scalectrix set for xmas. "He" will have about 30 ft of track, two GT3RS's and one 917-10 to start with. Is this a good scale/type to start with for actual use as well as collecting? This kid actually does play with his cars, trucks and trains. I am hoping the slot car stuff is not terribly fragile??

my dad had strombecker...

does yours have the steel rails? or the aluminum ones...if they're the alum. ones it's best setup as a rally circuit. the new 32nd scale cars sit really low (I have gouges from the rails in some of mine) and have a BIG magnet in them that helps out ALOT.

I had 40 feet of strombecker, and could do 180degree powerslides with an AWD rally slot car.

The new cars pull more current...I've had good success custom wiring low ohm AFX controllers into my system...they get warm, but have never failed.

As for fragilitly...I have cars that I run, and I have cars that I don't run...Yes they break. I've never had a mechanical failure (except in 1 corvette), but cosmetic ones are commonplace. if you can figure out how to remove the wings and mirrors before running, it really helps.

I'll try to post a pic of the layout later.

You guys with the old vintage 60's stuff might want to do a little research on values in today's collector market. I know little - if anything - about them. But I bought a small carrying case with 4 1:24 slot cars in it at an estate sale for $15. 2 of the cars were completely handbuilt. There was also a spare body in lime green (a Cox, I think) and another car - a Strombecker. There were little boxes of parts, controllers and the like too. I was going to use it just for display in my office but eventually put it for auction on eBay. I had an opening bid of $75. The bidding slowly climbed to around $200 over several days!!! With only a few minutes to go, a bidding war broke out and it sold for $750 to a Japanese collector!!!!!! I asked him if there was something in particular he was after. He said he was only interested in the spare body - he had never seen or heard of one in that particular color and HAD to have it for his collection ......
