Alternator and fan housing question

I have a 81 SC engine with a Marchel alt in it. The Fan housing is not the right one as the alt sticks to far out the back of it iterfering with the fit of the air baffle. What are my options? I must note the alt needs a rebuild anyhow so I need a new alt anyhow. ANy ideas

Ben, I'm somewhat confused. Did you remove this from the car or did you purchase the motor? My thought would be that the alt is not mounted completely to the housing. That is possible. The screws on the back are tough to get straight thru until they are seated. Can tell by the fan rubbing on the housing. Just a guess. I think the Marchal was standard on the 81's, might be wrong.

I just removed my fan and housing for powdercoating. Make sure that the connectors on the alternator are not interfering with the air guide. When I first reassembled mine I had the leads pointing down. I had to loosen them and point them to the side. If I hadn't take it apart myself I would have sworn it wouldn't all fit back together. My knuckles and back haven't recovered yet, but it looks great!

I bought a basket case 3.0 and the alternator was thrown on top as a core. There was no airguide so I bought one from a friend and when I went to hook it up after the major overhaul the air guide would not fit over the end of the alt. The alternator sticks out the backside of the fan housing to far for the airguide to fit on properly. I am thinking that the housing is not the correct one for the alternator as it seam as thogh it is not thick enough at the rear portion where the air guide mounts. Causing the alternator itself to interfer with the airguide. Let me know what you think

Any help would be great. Did they make different offsets or back spaced fan housings? I would like to figure this out before the engine goes back into the car in a month or so>

Yes there are at least three versions. The "R" number eg 0R, 4R, 5R, they are different. Carrera alternator takes a shroud with a 930 5r or later

i think if you check prior posts you will find some answers.. i think that the voltage regulator interferes with the shroud and you can eithe buy a new one or notch out the one you have..

mY ALTERNATOR Does not have an enternal reg. Thats what is so confussing. The alternator sticks out to far that is the major deal (on the back towards the front of the car) the fan side is fine.
