Major advantages of 78 vs 77 930?

I am looking at a 77 930 and would like to hear opinions on the 78 and newer models, other than the intercooler for hp is their a significant advantage to the 78 and up 930s, or do the earlier models have any advantages such as less weight etc. .

Thanks

ROW models:
Advantages: 40 hp extra, better brakes (it has intercooler, 300cc more and 917 brakes)
Disadvantages: more weight

They are very similar-

77 vs. 78
3.0 vs. 3.3L
6.5:1 vs. 7.0:1 compression
regular 911S brakes vs. 930 brakes

Unless you have a specific reason for wanting the Turbo Carrera, it's probably better to hold out for the '78 or '79. Especially if you will end up spending money to add an intercooler, new tail, etc.

The '77 is actually a shorter car as well. It revs quicker too. Long live the original!

My dream car is a ROW 1977 Turbo Carrera and backdate it to look like a longhood RSR.

Dont forget the weight....

My '77 930 has a weight on 1205kg "2651 lbs" in the original shape.

Correct me if i'm wrong but a '78 930 has something like 1380 kg "3036 lbs"

Also mostly of 3.3L has the aircondition and/or a roof hatch. (weight)

The 78 and up 930's would be a lot more car.
The weight gain would be off set by more HP,
better brakes and susp.
My 84 tiped the scales at 2757 lbs. dead stock,
only 100 lbs. more the the 77.
The 77 turbo is a cool car, you could up-date it
If the price is right.

Shawn,

that idea of backdating a 77 is pretty cool. i can almost see it and hear that growl. no need to spend much more $$ on the engine or the fenders... i really like the idea.

lendaddy,
The car was weighed before a carbon fiber body
kit was installed, it's at 2417 now. The only metal
body parts are the top and doors.

jryerson, I see your in Vegas? I would also recommend the 78-on for many of the issues above ie brakes, displacement etc, but importantly for the intercooler. With your warm weather the intercooler will be a key component to extending the temperatures you can safely dip into the boost and really enjoy what makes these cars great. It will also make future power upgrades easier.

Thanks to all that reponded.

The car has a intercooler upgrade, SSIs, Borla exhaust, a K28 upgrade with 1 bar spring and performance clutch and flywheel, I agree about the advantages of later models but what really appealed to me was the color.

I am going to inspect and pick it up this weekend.

Looks like a nice car, don't forget to update the brakes also..

On my '77 930 I updated the suspension, brakes, intercooler etc.
also loose some weight down at 2420 lbs with all interior stuff in it.
