My 1971 Targa Dream is over

Hi,

Well its time for another phase in my life and a porsche project isnt included. I bought a '71 Targa with ZERO rust and everything but the radio. The sweet woman who sold me the car didnt seem to be one to screw me, but the paper work is in so much red tape that the FBI would need to open a case to figure this out. Its not stolen, but that would probably have a faster resolution if it was, so I want to part it out. I wanted to know if I can get some kind of price list from a fellow pelicanite who has had to part an entire car.

Thanks,

Capt. Crunch

That's terrible! Have you tried socail engineering? Seems like somebody at the DMV/Sacremento would help if you were the "nicest guy in the world"

That's really too bad a zero rust early car isn't very common anymore. I'd say sell it whole, if it's as rust free as you say it'll be worth a fair amount just because of that.

Capt,

Go through the Pelican used parts listings and you will get a fairly good idea of what parts are worth. You can actually make a good buck or two off of parting the car out but its a shame to see it happen, especially if its not rusted.

Have you looked into doing a lost title or taking it to another state (have done it here in AZ) with a lost title. Takes 4-6 weeks and minimal work.

Am interested in a set of early front turn signals (complete) if you do decide to part it out!

NJ used to issue 'abandanment' titles, if a car was left unclaimed on another's property. If it isn't stolen, there must be a way to get the title cleared.

Could you use this entire rust-free car, to restore a rusty tub with good #'s?????

You don't apparently really want this car that badly or you would be asking how you could get through all this mucky paperwork. You didn't ask, but I'm going to tell you anyway. I did this with my 914 which was a lien sale and had been owned by 2 or 3 people since, never registered and no title since 1987. I registered it in Alabama for $25. AL is a non title state for older cars. No inspection, no nothing. This is well known by the hot rod community. Do you knw how many fiberglass '34 Fords there are running around that were built in the last 5 years and have '34 paper? Almost everyone, unless you want to go through the specially constructed vehicle debacle here in CA.

My point is, if you want a title, you can have one. You don't have to cut up a car in desparation. Unless, like I said, you really didn't want to finish what you started out to do. I think that's why so many cars get cut up. It's a way of salvaging the cost after getting in over your head.

Oh, and BTW, I have a '71 parts car that really is a total loss tub wise, and after the good stuff was gone, I can't give the rest away. I've got 50% percent of a car here that weighs 75% of the total original weight ( or at least it sure seems) and I have to make it go away. No fun.

Any pre 76 car in Alabama just needs a bill of sale to get a title. Heck, I even had a title for my 68 datsun and they just gave it back and said we don't need it! Pretty cool. In California, I am sure there is a process like we have here for an abandoned vehicle. Do the paperwork, run it in the paper for 3 consecutive weeks, take the application to the judge to sign and send it to dmv, and voila, a title comes in the mail. Just a day or so of legwork.

if the car is that clean, then paperwork can only be worth the extra effort

you'll spend way more time getting a car with papwer in perfect shape

Man that sucks, (Vulture swoops down) can I buy your heat shrouds off the fan? I want to backdate my heater. If you can't resolve the title issue I would appreciate first dibs on it.

In California you don't need a title. I don't understand, if you can part it out (i.e., you own it), why can't you get it licensed?

Use these guys.... I did and everything was good. Cost was $250 and I didn't have to do any of the leg work. Same principal as stated above, car was registered in AL and then sold back to me.

Follow their instructions to the letter and you will have a nice LEGAL title for your car. My DMV looked up the law in their books to confirm that it is completly legal.

My car was obtained from a shop that had the car for several years and then the owner of the car died and the car was left there to rot.

I now have a nice clean title without all of the red tape.

By the way, I did do a search through the state to make sure there was no next of kin or outstanding leins against the car before I procedded.
