Question Lose Weight to Lose Weight??

Here is something that I was thinking.... I have seen people talking about taking things out of the car to make it lighter for racing. Has anyone ever reached the point where you had to start taking weight off "you" because there was nothing left to removed from the car?

I guess all this holiday eating has me thinking.

You mean like taking off all your clothes before going for a drive?

In my case the answer is NO...

Yep. Same here...to a small degree. Was about to take the entire spare tire out of my 944 last summer because I figured: "well, it'll be lighter and I doubt that I'll need it as thats what AAA is for!"

Sure enough, I got a flat over 100 miles from home a month later. So I figured: why not just remove the "spare tire" from ME this time

The nice thing about removing weight from the car is IT STAYS OFF. Seems like whenever I lose weight it creeps back up on me.

HA! A subject I love - personal weight loss.

I began taking weight in the Spring. I saw Larry King interview Dr. Atkins, saw the diet thing he promoted, and said to myself, "I like meat. A lot of meat," and promptly imbibed in nothing but meat, eggs, cheese - but no starch - of any kind.

That and exercise shedded about 45 pounds off me.

I don't know how that effects the car, but it's been a lot more comfortable driving it.

YMMV...

Curious, have you had your Cholesterol levels checked lately? I have been struggling with Cholesterol for years and take meds to keep it within reason. Oatmeal/Cheerios for breakfast, sandwich no mayo for lunch, and reasonable dinner, fast food once a week tops, and w/o meds my count goes up to mid/high 300's I've started running again, and taking fish oil w/meds (Lipitor) and they now hover around 210. Can't imagine what would happen to me on a meat/eggs/cheese diet - but there are other sources of Protein I guess.

Have you ever seen a fat F1 or Nascar driver? From what I understand they have a daily workout. It also helps develope the muscle necessary to stay on the track for hours at a time.

As mentioned in another thread in OT, cyclists are also very concerned about weight loss. Sadly, serious riders are usually broke (riding all day) and can't afford to lighten their bikes. Their bodies however are lean and mean. On the opposite scale are the weekend warriors. They are generally "better fed" but do have the extra cash for those lightweight titanium spoke nipples.

Well, every little bit helps, and if someone was seriously overweight and lost a lot it would make the car quicker and handle better. Still, 100 lbs. is the difference between having a child, (or Britney Spears), , in the passenger seat. Not going to feel much different. Of course the weight loss would all be from one side of car, so that would be better.

The big difference w/ weight loss, (if you are starting out overweight), is how much better your body feels and handles, much bigger payoff than 20-30 lb. loss on a ~2500 lb. car, IMO.

I'm stongly considering it with some not so subtle hinting from the wife. But I'm not taking any chances & am ordering the fatboy seats in case I don't.

Recaro SRDs fit like a glove when you have a fit body.

Lose weight. It surely can't hurt. It is like free HP.

If you want a good way to lose weight, ride a bicycle. I have to drink protein shakes and down all the food I can find just to maintain weight (I'm 6' tall and 157 lbs dripping wet). Pretty sad.

I'm currently not subscribing as often to the Atkins diet. This Christmas season, I've introduced almost everything to my body that's put in front of me, as one can easily do given the "holiday cheer," etc. Still in all, I've been lucky not to gain more than two or three pounds since Halloween, which for me, is the official start of one's course in "stuffing."

I exercise, pure and simple, to combat weight gain. Cycling, treadmill work and weight lifting - in one form or the other - truly helps. If done long, vigorously and repetitively enough, there comes a time when the body becomes so efficient, it burns calories without much additional effort. Sure, some day's it's a pain in the ass, except when you get those emerging-from-the-surf-photos taken in Hawaii. That's when it counts.

By the way, when it comes to cycling, there's a formula, at least so I've heard, that every ten pounds lost on a bicycle increases one's uphill speed one to two mph. That may not be much for motorcyclists or car drivers, but for competitive cyclists, that's the difference between the also-rans and the guy wearing the yellow jersey.

That would be me. In POC racing, they weigh the cars without drivers. I can't take any more weight out of my car, and there are a couple of guys that don't weigh more then 160 lbs wet. A couple of different times this year, I was in the 260 range.(you would never have guessed it looking at me) So I decided to lose it where it was probably the most importnat place anyway, Me. I dropped a solid 30 lbs and would like to get down to about 210.

Ironically, the POC, starting for the 2004 season will assume a driver weight of, I think 180lbs. you weigh less then that, you add weight, you weigh more then that you get to take weight out of your car. Lucky for me, now I get to remove that 60 lbs of lead bolted to my passenger floor:

260? I'd have believed it Mike. Hell, at 210, you'd look 260! To inform you guys who have never met Michael? You wouldn't want to mess with MMARSH. He's one of those fortunate few to have a "solid body"..one of those guys you want with you if you need to walk down a dark alley...think defensive end body..naw, more linebacker...perhaps nose tackle? Nope, back to defensive end....because he's solid and quick. (edit) Mike, as broad/tall as you are? 210 could be too skinny...you might lose more than just weight at 210.

Jurgen, I was laughing at your skinniness until I calculated my weight in pounds (I work in KG). I am the same height and weigh a whole 165lb.

Actually, just yesterday I took part in a heart size vs body composition study (my wife is at Med school and one of her friends was looking for suckers, I mean people, to test).

I had my body composition measured by calipers, bio-impedance, and a DEXA machine. The last one is like a photocopier, which tells me (with no arguments - it is the most accurate measurement available) I have 13.1% body fat (and where it is - in my case pretty evenly distributed). I better ease up on the mince pasties and start exercising more, 'cause I want closer to single figures.

As far as "free" checkups go, I also got my BP (pretty normal), heart rate (51!), and they took blood and will hopefully tell my wife if I have anything to worry about. My heart is "normal" according to the ECG machine, and I had a sort of ultrasound and watched the little bugger beating (I saw the m______l valve flapping around and learned that the blood flows out at about 1.2m/second.

All in all, quite exciting for someone who hates going to the doctor. Oh yeah, if I seem quite healthy, I am only 28.
