I just got around to installing my Steve W chip today.
![]() To tell the truth, the first 911 I drove was an SC. Carreras' always felt a little choked in comparisson. Not quite as revvy? Well, after fitting Steves' chip my car has become very lively indeed! ![]() I need some advice as to how to stop the smell of burning rubber from entering the cabin??? ![]() Seriously though. The car started up and idled as smooth as silk straight away. The installation took about 20 minutes. Great fitting instructions, including pictures. Driving the car, I immediately noticed that you now have to concentrate on not going over 3000rpm during the warmup stage! The throttle response is much more 'on the money'. The engine feels looser (if thats the right word?), much more willing in the 2k to 4k rev range. The best money I have ever spent on any of my cars!!! My car is totally a Stock UK spec car. No other mods at all. Steve burnt the chip to this spec for me and I received it in about 10 days. The only thing I had to do was adjust the idle down slightly, which is the usual situation I believe. Get this on your Christmas list. Easy to fit (even for a monkey like me) and an amazing injection of life into your car. I now wish that my quattro was a later model with Motronic instead of CIS. If it were, I'd get Steve to do a chip for that aswell! Thanks Steve. ![]()

Congrats on the SteveW chip, sounds nice.
No sympathy for your WR from a WX owner, though ![]() (transplant a 3B or AAN from a wreck and chip THAT!) |

No transplant for me. The quattro is original and will stay that way. I bought the 911 to spice up my life a little!
I wouldn't mind building a replica short q though.

Mark, I am glad your chip worked out well. I have a Steve W chip in my 87 Carrera, The car is stock except for mist of the time I run a Dansk Pre-muffler instead of a Cat. The chip that I have also raised the rev. limiter to @ 6750 rpm's. And Steve was able to turn off that annoying up shift arrow on the tack, so now it only comes on when yor hit 6500 rpm's. Which I enjoy doing!

I'm settling for just a replica SQ hood to let out some of that heat. also following the CIS to EFI threads going on here, my SC has always been reliable but there's power to be had...more boost Snoopy! BTW: your sig has provoked me into updating mine ![]() Last edited by thabaer; 12-16-2003 at 12:06 PM.. |

Idle adjustment
I recently received an email from Steve Wong indicating that I have the option of swapping my chip (purchased recently) with the new and improved version. In his email, he did mention that there might be the need to adjust the idle, which you indicated that you had to do. Why is this and how difficult is this to do? My mechanic (Porsche factory trained) is against chips (and won't work on your car if it is not clean) so I will probably have to do it myself or get some other mechanic to do it. Any help in answering these questions would be appreciated!

Hi DCN, perhaps along with Mark's input I can also clarify some questions. The ignition map timing for many of the new 87-89 chips were raised from the factory preset value of 3.5 degrees at to approximately 6.8 degrees at idle. This has the effect of making the engine more efficient at idle, and possibly increasing the net idle speed so that it may idle about 100-150 rpm higher than it normally should be. The way to readjust this back down is at the idle adjustment screw at the throttle body which can be turned with a small 7mm socket.
![]() The increased idle timing has the primary benefits of providing a smoother idle, a smoother engagement of the clutch just off idle when you are at a stop, and reducing the idle bounce such as when you have the AC on. At a stop, you do not have to gas and slip your clutch as much to get it going, for a much improved easier takeoff and significant reduction in clutch wear compared to the stock timing, and just how the Carreras came stock. Back to back testing over the past few months was performed by several users, both here and in Europe, comparing leaving the idle maps alone vs. advancing them, and every single user undeniably preferred the modified setup and did not mind the trade off spending a couple of minutes to turn the idle screw down a little. It was a debate for me also whether to leave them alone, or deal with the potential questions or issues, but in the end, everyone convinced me otherwise. |
