Broken Rear Sway Bar Mount
 

Sure this is easy to fix. Just get the re-inforced one and weld it in. One problem, its the left mount and its almost completely covered by the fuel pump mount on my 73 911e.

How in the bejangles can you get in there 1) to cut off the remains of the old one and 2) weld in the new one? Maybe I dont have the right tools or enuf ingenuity.

Any ideas?

This is not an uncommon problem,....:)

I unbolt the fuel pump and move it up a bit to get it out of the way. Then, I use my small die grinder and a cutoff wheel to grind the welds of the broken mount.

After its been cut off, you can use an abrasive wheel to clean up the welds and the panel so you have nice clean surface to weld on the new mounts.

Thanks Steve for the reply. My fuel pump mount is welded to the tb tube (appears to be undisturbed like it came from the factory). I can remove the fuel pump from it, which I have done, but the fp mount (shapped like a hammock) is still in the way. I've thought about cutting it off so I can get to the sb mount, but would rather not. Welding it back on would be a problem. Looks like when built at the factory, first the fp mount is welded to the tb tube before the tb tube is welded into the car.

This is not a fun job IMHO. When Chuck helped me replace mine, we had to grind most of the bracket off with an angle grinder. The grinder was not that hard, just tedious working under the car with all that crap falling on you. Welding on your back is no fun either.

If I was going to do it agian, I would just pay a shop two hours labor to do it. If you decide to do it, make sure everything is removed from the area too. Wires, fuel lines, whatever may be within that area.

Did you have to cut off the fuel pump mount?

Mine is welded to the torsion bar tube and I cant figure out any way to get access to the sway bar mount without cutting off the fuel pump mount.

Matt's car is a Carrera. Fuel pump is up front.

So I guess I'll be doing an r&i on my fuel pump mount. Unless I can get a big cutting whell on the sw mount and a small tip welder to weld it back on.
