brake pad warning light question
Just finished a 2 1/2 year resurrection of my '84 ROW Carrera coupe that had not driven since '91. The car has all new brakes and pad sensors yet my brake pad warning light stays on. I tried unhooking all the sensors to isolate the problem to one corner but the light stays on even with all of them unhooked. Hmmm. Question, is the warning light supposed to cycle on every time you start the car so you know the light works? If that is the case perhaps then my problem is with whatever gizmo is supposed to turn the light off after it checks itself. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

If the circuit is broken (unplugged) the light will come on. All the sensors have to be plugged in and not worn through. On mine, the car has to be running to shut the light off. Make sure they are plugged in firmly all the way.

So when you get in your car, turn the key to "ON" without starting the engine the warning light illuminates and as soon as the engine is running the light goes off?

Ok thanks. I think what I'm up against here is the hign probability that whatever signals the low brake pad warning light that the engine is indeed running has been disabled. The car now has PMO carbs and Electromotive twin spark ignition instead of the Motronic EFI and distributor. Any ideas out there? Or should I just leave the light unplugged which kind of sucks because you lose the e/brake warning light.

You should be able to pull out just the bulb for the Pad sensor light and still have the E-brake light function.

Yep, I thought about pulling out the bulb too but was hoping to keep the pad warning light working just for posterity. Actually, after getting the red cover off the e-brake / low brake pad / seat belt warning light, I tried removing the brake pad bulb for some time unsuccessfully before I was afraid that I was going to break something and stopped. The next best option that I saw was to take the clock out of the dash and reach behind the assembly and unplug the whole thing. I guess if it proves to be too complicated to get the light to work I'll just figure out some way to get the stupid bulb out, although that is almost like admitting defeat to an inanimate object.

The system sort of works in reverse of what you might think. The sensor actually wears through and cuts a connection which then makes the light go on. So if a sensor is worn through the light will be on. If the sensors are not connected then the light will be on. If there is a bad connection where the sensor plugs in, the light will be on. If the wires that lead to the sensors are worn and broken somewhere, the light will be on.

I thought that was how it worked also. I still think my problem is related to the high probability that whatever tells the warning light system that my engine is running has been inadvertantly disabled due to all the mods I've done. I'm going to check the wiring diagram and see what I can see. I see you are out in Carnation, magic930. How much gravel is there on High Bridge Road these days?

Remove the negative cable from the battery....wait at least 30 seconds....reconnect.
Report back your successful findings.... ![]() ---Wil Ferch

OK thanks much I'll try that although I'm a little doubtful since I've had the battery hooked and unhooked quite a few times during this past
3 weeks shakedown run and the warning light has never been unlit. Then I'll have to figure out how to reset my clock forward 30 seconds...
