Educate me on automotive moulding clips...

I did post this in the Paint & Bodywork Discussion Forum, but after 50+ reads and no reply I can only assume that either the question is stupid, or I posted in the wrong forum - so I will try here as well

I have a long planed (over a year now) project to install 964 side mouldings (or are they named skirts) onto my SC. One of the reasons I have been taking so long to do this is wanting to investigate the best and most appropriate way to install them.

For one thing, I want to be able to easily remove them to get to the torsion bar hole and jacking plug. But also did not want a load of visible screws or other fasteners along the side of the car!

After a load of searching and reading, I have discovered that the correct thing to use are called moulding clips. i have located a supplier close to me (England), but have no idea what clip type I should use and what size. Here is a link to their site - Plastic Moulding Clips | Classic Car Parts

Any advice and guidance before I make a complete pigs dinner out of this project would be greatly appreciated

Is there not anyone on this forum that works in a body shop or has experience with these clips?

I must be asking the wrong question in the wrong place

Maybe not really helpful, but an idea:

I once ordered, but not mounted at Betterbodiesmotorsport some 965 side skirts and received them with these:

It was needed to drill into rocker panels to mount the clips, in the rockers were slots to slide them in, like this:

My first thought would be to send photos and a discription of what you want to do to the supplier. Get their advice. Maybe they could send samples of different clips.

If you really have time on your hands, remove the front rubber bumper strip and look how the mounting peice is attached to the metal bumper. As MrPerkles stated, there are two clips, male and female.

Thank you for the reply.

Roland, those look a lot like these.

2 piece plastic moulding clip white with black base, for an 8mm panel hole

Would you say they are the same?

the important part is to measure the distance from the 964 clip housing/location to the panel you are fitting it to and also the housing diameter.IE top of the male head to the base

In function, yes. Mine were the cheaper style without female part. This one looks tighter in fit. As mentioned above, measurements are recommended for proper fitments

All good comments. One thing I am not sure about is how the 964 side moulding is installed on the 964? I can not find any indication that it is installed with clips, as there is no slot in it (as you find on the rubber moulding on the front bumper on my SC for instance.

I think I will have to invent my own mounting using something like the clips I posted above, and measure what the distance will be between the moulding and the car.

you'll find this on pelicanparts search diagramms:

System denies pic...

Search at diagramms for 964here:

http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/

then open PDF and go to page 420, there you will find the rochers with clips etc...

Hi Kroggers

Here you have some pictures of 964 skirts and mounting:

Pretty different from the G-model SC and Carrera

OK, why did I not think about using PET - thank you Roland. Why not use the Porsche parts to install this if at all possible...

Fastracer73, that is good stuff. Is it your car? Do you have any more pictures from how the skirt is supported under the car?

Looking at the skirts I have got (they are used and were installed onto an SC before using screws - not a nice solution I think) The mounting points for the factory clips have been removed.

I will investigate further. Like I said, I want to do this properly and have the ability to remove the skirts for maintenance and access to the torsion bars etc.
