Even though I've never owned an SC, I voted for it because of its reliability.
But, here are my other "best" categories: Sound = 2.2 liter Power = 3.6 liter Happy Holidays to everyone. |
I voted 2.7RS because it is the one I would choose. I guess I think 3.2 is the best compromise (power vs reliability vs ease of use).
I'd take the GT3 engine above them all though - I don't care if it is cooled by water, it has more than 100hp/litre and sounds great. |

Tell that wacky Souk above you all about this engine, would ya? :D That nut thinks the Carrera 3.0 is better........... Building a motor, I agree the C 3.0 has all sorts of avenues (with that wimpy crank........... ;) ). But if we're just talking ONE motor, taken in stock form and dumped in a car? I'm gonna vote for the 3.2 Motronic. Not just because I have one. It's quite simple and somewhat powerful. Practically tunes itself (otherwise i'd vote for a carbed motor like the 2.4S MFI screamer)! It's a relatively easy swap since it uses the older motor and trans mounts. Wiring is your biggest concern. 3.6 is kinda similar, but the mounts and the twin plug issue are more of a hassle than the 3.2. But not a bad hassle for more grunt. You're kinda limited with mods for a stock 3.2 Motronic, but we're talking stock motors, right? |
My vote goes for the 75-77 2.7 Thermo reactor motorshttp://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/puke.gif

993TT - I have only driven the 3.2 Carrera, 3.6 993 and 3.3 turbo cars as references, but the 993TT is the ultimate evolution of the air cooled engine and really does feel like Porsche finally got everything right. On the other hand, it is a bit of a pain to work on, but the major DIY engine maintenance is oil changes (no valve adjustments, thank God) and they are doable.

If we're looking for the criteria suggested in the first post by Wayne, I'd have to say the 3.0 and 3.2 engines are it (especially "longevity & reliability"), and I'd pick the 3.0 because that's the one I'm most familiar with. My dream project Porsche remains a 72-74 coupe, lightened a bit, with an SC engine and SSIs with dual-out muffler. With the combo of early 915 tranny, the torque curve moved down a bit, and the lighter weight of the early cars, you've got a fast, reliable daily driver/track car. I don't see how the Porsche crowd suddenly became all about hi-po 3.6 engines and monster HP when the crown of the marque is a 2.7L car with 210 horses. Porsche is about scalpels, not broadswords, imo.

Why has the 2.0 aluminum case engine 130hp been given no love. Its a very reliable engine and without it there wouldnt be the newer ones. The early aluminum motor has no issues aside from the tensioners. Every other powerplant has had its downfalls. Furthermore the 2.7 from 73 to 77 ? You guys gotta be kidding. Its a great motor but we are talking about stock to stock. The 73` R/S motor falls into the same catagory too.

I hope this will be a fair poll.
Are there any hanging chads?;) |
I don't know. I've only had one and it's not on the list! But, I could believe it's the best ever 'cause it's in my 911! :)
|
because our tracks are relatively short compared to Euro I believe that torque is the game to play.
3.6 |
most people here polled on the bbs own SCs and 84-89 Carreras and so of course those are the two top engine choices.
This poll is not statistically or scientifically significant. |
Perhaps a better title for this thread would be "What 911 Motor is in your car?"
;) |
The Problem with this poll is the title. "What is the best 911 Engine?"
To broad. 3.6 is a good engine, but the best? I don't think the sound of that engine stock, or the feel of it for that matter raises the hair on the back of my neck the way an early MFI engine does when your reving the crap out of it. Blasting through the canyons with the windows down, a gear lower then you need to be. Is there really any sound more glorious, more Porsche, then an early MFI motor? |
Chevy V8
...oops, wrong thread. Um...78-89(?) 3.0. Leaning to the late CIS-equipped '83 3.0, with the lack of sump plate, and better driveability because of the smaller intake runners. |
